As reported from MSN online, New Zealand bans types of semi automatic weapons, high-capacity magazines, “military” style semi automatic and “assault” rifles following the recent mass shootings...

That did not take very long, only five days. Unbelievable. I am glad to be an American living in America!!

    Here's the order.

This will be easy to circumvent via switching to pump action Troy rifles. However, they've promised to take additional steps and that will probably include banning magazines over a certain size, making the Troy pumps a stop-gap measure at best.

I imagine Garands and SKS rifles will be in demand. After they get those, NZ competitive shooters will take up Cowboy Action shooting so they can have centerfire (lever action) rifles with a bit of power that hold more than 5 rounds. As in the UK, I imagine that Practical Shotgun will become a big sport, along with the ridiculously extended tubes hanging under those barrels.

My heart goes out to NZ gun owners. Like the song says, you don't know what you've got till it's gone.

    Smells all too convenient.
Not really. If you don't care about due process the way we try to (or pay lip service to) in the USA, you can just issue orders like this. It's not actually a law; it's just an order changing the definition of terms in the law that was passed back in 1983.

If you read the cited section of that law, it's absolutely clear that the NZ government has the power to declare any rifle or shotgun to be a military style assault rifle subject to all the restrictions that entails.

It looks like the NZ government is getting together details on a buyback program for many of the 1.2 million firearms the public owns. It's bad enough that weapons have to be confiscated but I am sure many will not get near what they paid for each of them.

When the time comes take it down to the serialized part and hand that over nothing else on it is a gun.

most other countries have no RKBA

So glad to be an American

    We mustn't ever get complacent.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-capacity_magazine_ban

Magazines have been banned here before.
    1994.
    Public opinion is forever shifting.
I have family and friends who hunt and own firearms who see no point my owning 20 or 30 round mags.
Be mindful that these forums represent one end of a spectrum.

RKBA is, most certainly, already subject to restrictions.
More could come in very short order.

That's a U.S. perspective and not the way the law is written in NZ. From what I've read, there's some wiggle room for removing attached accessories but trying to turn in an AR without the upper, bolt, barrel, etc. isn't, as far as I can tell, going to work.

Hell, they ban .22LR magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. That includes any magazines that look like they can hold more. The law down there explicitly says that a .22LR magazine is banned, even if it holds 15 or less rounds, if it feeds a scary-looking rifle and it gives the outward appearance of being able to hold more ammo. It doesn't have to actually be able to hold more ammo than the limit; it's banned if it just looks like it can hold more ammo.

I find reading their 1983 gun law, the one the press is holding up as being so lax, to be fascinating. The quirks are many and the sensibility is low.

    BTW
Precision in language is paramount when it comes to the law.

The NZ ban exempts rimfire only 0.22 inches and less.

SAAMI specs for .22LR is a projectile diameter of .223 to .2255

By the the literal verbiage that Ben posted a 22lr firearm is banned. 5mm rimfire would be allowed.

While we know they won't enforce it that way right now, we don't know what will happen in the future. I imagine that if NZ gun owners are still shooting .22LR in a couple of generations, some anti-gun geek will realize the truth of what you've posted. Then the literal wording of the order can be used to confiscate lots more rifles.

Thanks for starting my day with such a depressing observation. :(
