I am fairly new to DFW area and I am seriously considering getting a SAKO TRG 42 in 338 Lapua Magnum. I understand that it is a very expensive cartridge, but I really like the idea of having a hard hitting long range rifle and I don't shoot 100s of rounds every month anyways. Btw, I am not a reloader, at least for now. Questions that I wanted to ask:

    1. Does anyone on this forum have a TRG 42 in 338 and how bad is the recoil? Some people say that with a good brake it is the same as an un-braked 308.
    2. Anyone in DFW area who would not mind letting me shoot just once?
    3. Are there enough opportunities to shoot targets long range near DFW (1000+)?
    4. Are there enough opportunities to hunt long range (hogs, etc.) in DFW area?

I could use some input to help me decide on this 338 idea.

I have never fired one but have looked into them before.

Here’s part of the reason why I don’t own one. It’s a LONG distance shooter. If your only shooting 1000ish yrds there are other, less expensive options. If I was able to shoot 1400+ yards I’d look into one. If I was going to max out at 1200 yards or so, I would consider a 6.5CM, 300WSM or 300WM.

I had a Savage BA in 338 Lapua so I assume it would be similar.

Recoil wasn't bad at all with a good brake on it. The muzzle blast is what will wear you out.

I agree with above, up to 1000 yards is boring with it. If you don't have access to longer than that it is a waste.

I don't hear much about anybody anywhere hunting (hogs especially) long range in Texas. Most is normal distances, say 300 yards or less.

But if your budget allows it and you really have an itch to scratch then get one and enjoy. I truly enjoyed mine but honestly it didn't serve any real purpose besides clearing the firing line of jackasses who thought their braked AR15s were bad ass.

Do you live in DFW area? If you do, does that mean that 1400+ ranges are not available in the area? Based on your tone it sounded like you would own a 338 if you had a chance to shoot 1400+

If you are on the Ft Worth side Triple C isn’t far, over in Cresson. Goes to 2,200 yards.

Have you spent any time shooting 1k? I would say you may run in to some problems trying to shoot 1500-2000 yards with factory ammo. It usually doesn’t have the consistency needed and it’s hard to find a factory load that is the best load for the rifle.

I run a Barrett, not a Sako, but found with a silencer the 338 is quite pleasant to shoot. And Cresson is the place for long range...my own range only goes to 600 and is boring with a 338.

No, I’m a little south of that. If I had the time and a range I could stretch my legs I would certainly be interested in one. Locally we have a 1200yd range.
