ETA: My A1c dropped 4 points in about 6 months.
When I was diagnosed Type 2, my blood sugar at that moment was 399. My A1c was 12.9.

The doc prescribed Metformin and Actos and sent me to a nutritionist. I followed everything perfectly, ate less, ate better, exercised like crazy, severely cut grains/potatoes/sugar, kept detailed records, literally made charts and graphs of everything to report to the doc, etc.

In less than 2 months, my A1c dropped from 12.9 to 6.7. The doctor pronounced me under control and told me to just keep doing the same stuff.

The problem? In less than two months I had gained 60 pounds. (Remember, I was gaining massive amounts of weight while eating fewer calories of better quality food and also exercising much more, something that tends to confuse people who have a simplistic "calories in vs. calories burned" binary view of weight loss.) The weight gain was a side effect of Actos and it hit me like a ton of bricks. The doctor didn't care. He specifically told me that getting my A1c in line was his job and that my fat was my problem. He absolutely refused to try any other medications because what he had prescribed was working.

I quit that doctor over that issue.

In the ensuing years, progress has been in fits and starts and sometimes in the wrong direction. I sure wish Actos wasn't poison to me. The stuff was a miracle for controlling A1c but the side effects were just too much to handle.

Ben, those are the highest numbers I’ve ever seen or heard. CRAZY High numbers. You’re lucky to be alive. I hope you’re now taking metformin.

When it comes to a1c, the only way to drop it and sustain it is keeping your blood sugar from rising above 140 after meals. Avocados do it for me.

Regarding weight gain, I gained a significant amount of weight in an extremely short time frame similar to what you experienced. I’m disciplined and used to fasting, and no matter how much I starved the weight wouldn’t come off. Excess glucose was going straight into fat storage.

If I want to lose weight I HAVE to eat lots of vegetables. It’s the only way to get the nutrients I need, feel sated, and not consume too many calories. Avocados (which I happen to like a lot) act as a buffer before eating the rest of a meal and prevents my blood sugar from rising precipitously. If I want to eat lasagna, I eat an avocado before. My glucose never goes above 140.

A good, satisfying way to kill hunger is drinking nut milk. Chocolate Almond Cashew Milk is 90 calories a serving and straight Cashew Milk is 25 calories a serving. Mixed roughly 60 cashew/40 choc, I not only satisfy my sweet tooth but it kills hunger and leaves me full and sated. Try it, the stuff is inexpensive.

Yes, plus Victoza and Invokana. Doc wanted to move me to Ozempic but the debilitating nausea and frequent vomiting made me nix that.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it.

I started Ozempic in February. Some slight nausea and some odd times of insomnia but it's been manageable. Plus my a1c numbers should look real good next month. I've also lost 20lbs since it slows down digestion and you feel full.

Nausea was a prob with Bydureon. That, and the horse needle that was on the injectors. Doc said it would kill my appetite which it did, but the risk of pancreatic issues outweighed the benefits once I got a handle on my eating habits.

My problem is I like to eat. Don’t particularly need a reason other than it tastes good.

Anyone taking high doses of fish oil? I am, one of the side effects was a change in my blood thickness. It used to be viscous to the point that after pricking my finger for a glucose check and squeezing out a large drop, I could raise my finger vertically and it would just sit there without running down my finger. Now, it’s a lighter color and thinner. It runs down my finger and occasionally squirts when I squeeze it to get enough out for the test strip.

Your Bydureon pen must have been different from mine, I never even noticed the needle.

I have been taking fish oil 3 times daily for years, have not noticed the issue you speak of.

The chocolate has too much sugar for me, but the unsweetened version of the Silk Cashew Milk is low carb and no sugar.

Since one of the problems with a keto diet (for those who can do it) is a source of high quality fat, I've been known to blend Silk Cashew Milk with 1 Tbs MCT oil, and might even add a Tbs of full fat heavy whipped cream.

Stops my hunger, and those two MCT's provide the energy to burn some more fat.

That’s one reason why I dilute Chocolate Cashew Milk with unsweetened plain Cashew Milk. Since I stopped drinking soda, the taste for sweets has diminished. Which is a good thing considering how much I like to eat.

    I just finished a 2 month cut.
Last night I went and ate a boatload of pizza at a nice pizza place and it was good!

I lost 15 lbs in 8 weeks and I ate 4-5 times a day doing it.
I ate about 10 calories per lb of body weight and got 40% of those from protein while doing heavy compound weights 5 times a week.

Now I'm going to start adding calories back at 100 more per week until I'm at about 3000 per day and I'll do that for about 3 months.
By that time I should have gained about 4-5 pounds at which point , I'll cut again and this time I want to be doing on the low 230 range

Hormel Protein pack of meat nuts and cheese.

I intermittently fast from food and drink water from 6pm to 8 am. I cheat on Sundays , total daily calorie intake is between 1,500 up to 2,000.
I limit any soft drinks or sweet tea at lunch to 2 times per 7 day! same with any desserts . I walk a mile a day and added some push ups and crunches this week!

I’m gonna start fasting more often. I fast one Sunday a month for personal reasons but I’m going to start fasting from solid food 3 days a week. I’ve found that two cashew milk drinks a day kills my hunger and doesn’t cause problems with keeping my glucose in a healthy range.

I can eat like a horse. I’ve tried everything from Ensure to powdered drink mixes galore and nothing kills my hunger and is filling like nut milk.
