I recently acquired a S&W 629PC snubbie. Most of the revolvers I own have barrels that start around 6 inches so I thought I'd try a snubbie that wasn't a J-frame to shake things up. I never really thought of carrying it for self defense.
I will be going to SE Utah for vacation soon and thought about taking the 629 with me to serve as my mountain gun. In the past I have carried everything from 357 to 500mag. No bears have been encountered personally but there are plenty in the area as evidenced by scat and posted warning signs.
I'm trying to pack lighter than usual so I'm considering just changing out the ammo in the 629 for when I'm in civilization vs the wild.
Sooo, after that long winded intro, is anyone out there carrying 44mag for self defense? What ammo are you using? Would 44 SPL be better? I'll be using Underwood Extreme Penetrators while out in the wild to help make up for the short barrel. Open to suggestions.

    .44 mag.

If the slug misses them, the fireball will get 'em. If the fireball doesn't get 'em, the concussion will. If the concussion doesn't get 'em, the noise will. In any case, at a minimum they will be blinded, stunned and deaf...

Get an appropriate holster made to carry my .480 Ruger.

I usually like Buffalo Bore hardcast lead for big critter defense in back country
If I cant get that just FMJ or anything beside soft lead or hollow points

I typically go that route but have been impressed by Lehigh bullets. Solid while still providing major hydrostatic shock and deep penetration.

I wouldn't hesitate to carry that gun for self defense (have though of getting a 3" 629 for awhile for that reason). I would load it with either hot 44 special or light 44 magnum. Full house 44 mag is going to over penetrate like a mother**** and quick followup shots would be a pipe dream. Regular 44 special kind of defeats the purpose of carrying a 44 mag. You might as well carry a 1911 at that point and have a few extra shots.

Something around 1000 FPS would probably be good. Either a 200gr or a 240gr pill.

    Laughs in .454 Casull snubby.

Seriously though, if in doubt of whether the local fauna will immediately recognize you as the top of the food chain, any caliber that begins with “4” and ends with “Magnum” or “Casull” will balance the odds of not becoming lion or bear fecal matter in your favor.

If I wanted something to carry larger than a .357 it would be the S & W model 57 for two legged vermin.
