I love my M&P Shield. Carries well and I can actually shoot it. Try renting a bunch and see what you like. A carry gun is pretty personal.
They do make a Shield in .45 ACP also if you're set on that caliber.
That's where I went when I selected my first carry gun. I highly recommend this. It's been a few years but the facilities were clean and the staff very friendly.

My main cc is an XDs 45. It goes just about everywhere I do. I have no complaints.
I also cc an MP shield 9. A bit thinner & lighter than the XDs.

Consider the Sig Sauer P365. Smaller than a Shield but has 10+1, 12+1 or 15+1 capacity. And there's now a model with a manual safety.
I don't have one, but a friend does. Haven't shot it, but it feels really good in the hand. When you hold the gun and feel how compact it is, it doesn't seem possible it could carry that much ammo.
Personally, I'd rather have a 9mm with 10+1 or 12+1 capacity than .45 with 5 or 6 rounds. But that's just personal preference. YMMV.

With the extra mag I carry, my .45 has 17 rounds.
If 17 rounds of .45 aren't enough, I'm in the wrong part of town.
Yeah, I tend not to drive towards war zones.

And yet, a church or school could instantly become a war zone...
I'm not the only one carrying at my school and don't often have reason to go to "gun free zones".
Not that I'm against it, but constitutional carry doesn't nullify "gun free zones".
