One of the best Drive-In burgers ever, is the #5 from Keller's. Last I saw or heard, only the NW Highway location was still open, with 2nd Ave and Harry Hines being shut down many years ago. Other than friends, that would be about the only thing I miss about living near there.

Funny as I ate at the Harry Hines location a few weeks ago. #5, fries, and a Miller Lite.

Guess I'm wrong then and it was only the 2nd Ave store that closed.

Coulda swore that H.H. was closed last time I went there, though it has been at least a decade since I was in that area though.

I remember as a kid I loved going to XXX Drive-in. I can't really remember how good their burgers were, but they had the best root beer floats ever.

    Gunz are icky.
Since we’re visiting WayBackville here is one to see if you’re real deal old time San Antonio.

Webers Black Cow drive-in on Broadway.
What was the grape soda/vanilla ice cream float called?

Bonus point: What was an Ice House?

Really? Glad I didn't ask about Red Robin.

Just for the record, I don't like the bread Jax uses. I hate it enough that it spoils the burger for me. As for Red Robin, that's where I go when I want a decent burger these days. That doesn't mean I won't drop into a DQ for a BeltBuster occasionally but I've really cut back on my burger intake. Since I eat fewer of them, I usually go to Red Robin.

Frankly, I can't find a burger I truly like. Lots are edible - DQ, Whataburger, Wendys, et. al. But a really good burger? Ever since Just Burgers closed, I can't find a really good one anywhere close to me.
 I guess I just meant that Jax is more of a sit-down restaurant--like Red Robin. I know I sit down and enjoy my Whataburgers too, but I definitely don't view it as a restaurant.

The best burgers I've ever had have been at Pappas Burger on Westheimer--right next door to Pappas Steakhouse. Some pretty fine cuts of beef make their way next door into the burgers on a regular basis. I know you're in the Houston area so give them a try.

I'm okay about the Red Robin burgers, but all in all, if I want a quick burger and fries, it's Whataburger for me.

My favorite fast food burger is In and Out. And, of course, they are a Cali company. But I overlook that for the tastiness. If you like Whataburger just go and eat there. Life is short, and you can't worry about everything.
I've experienced In and Out in California and Las Vegas . . . and tried their menu some of the secret menu stuff. I am impressed with how they treat their employees; however, I am less than impressed with their food. It's ok, but it's not worth the cult love.

    Burger gourmands all, including me.

I won't pay for a burger that costs as much as a high quality sit down restaurant meal. Nor, will I cook and dress my own burger at a restaurant. That's what the hired help is for........

    What to do then?

    Fast food.

WB, Wendy's are good enough for me and relatively inexpensive, but no McD's or BK's. I wouldn't eat their food if it was free.......

We still have Ice Houses . . . but it's a different concept in the South than most of the rest of the country. Southland developed their old ice houses into Tote'm, which became 7-Eleven. But most of us just think about an open air bar/restaurant that specializes in the sale of cold beer, as an ice house.

I remember an ice house as being the place my dad would go to by block ice to make home made ice cream and to ice down watermelons.
