Hello from Mineola, TX. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, and if so, I can't seem to find it in a search.
Does anyone have hands-on experience with SCCY pistols? Good or bad? My son, 40 years old, has been looking at a CPX-1 9mm but I've never fired one so I'm unable a give him advice on their quality and reliability. He needs a pistol just for home security and he's found a new CPX-1 for $179.00.
Thank you very much for your help in this matter!

Had one. thought it felt cheap. But it did go bang every I time pulled the trigger. The CPX-1 has a useless safety. The raised area around the safety lever bothered my hand. This was deleted on the 2.

I have cpx-2 and put a couple of boxes through it. It went bang every time. I think Kel-tec makes a better gun but each to his own.

If you buy one, it'll be worth about 40% of what you paid for it five minutes after you walk out of the store.

Not good pistols. I've seen a few that would not run no matter what i tried.

Encourage him to spend more, even bumping his budget to $300 opens him up to police trade in glocks, S&W M&P's, caniks, etc.

A defensive firearm is not something you want to cheap out on, after all, you wouldn't cheap out on a fire extinguisher, would you?

If your son can add about $100 to that $179 budget, it opens up a whole world of better guns. Heck, there was a Walther PPS listed on the buy/sell forum here the other day for $250, and that's a great gun.

But here are just a couple of examples of new ones he can buy today:

    Smith & Wesson Shield - $257

    Walther Creed 9mm - $250

My opinion is as such. The trigger is horrendous. Too long and too hard with the break in a weird place, not allowing for accuracy. I have large hands, so take that part for what it's worth. They are good "truck guns" and good for the tackle box. And maybe even a back-up pillow gun. Spend a bit more and get a Ruger, Walther or S&W.

If that gun shop on 69 (?) and 80 by the auto parts store is still open, try talking to them. Used to buy from them quite often when they/he had the storefront on 80.

Thanks guys! My son is a CPA in Houston and has WAY more $$$ than I do. I think, hope, that I've convinced him to get one of the S/W 6906s that AIM Surplus has for sale. The gun shop in Mineola, if you're referring to the Ponderosa, has been closed for several years. The locals couldn't tolerate the owner's "personality," and he later died of cancer. East TX ammo, also in Mineola, has changed owners and relocated.

I have to be the of man out...... But.....I was curious about them. I recently purchased one. Yes the trigger needs help but it's doable. The kel tec p11 was much worse trigger and no where near build quality of the sccy cpx-2 The sccy cpx-2 has the softest recoil I have come across in a sub compact of that size and weight. Yes it's a bit snappy but once you adjust your grip no issues.

Actually the build quality no different than any other polymer pistol.

You have to remember that it is a hammer fired pistol. Trigger pull long a little heavy like a revolver. it also gives second strike capability much like a revolver.

Life Time no questions asked warranty that follows the gun.

Capacity is 10 to 11 in a mag plus one in the tube.

Lighter loaded than Glock 26 unloaded.

Super easy to breakdown and work on.

Mine had never had an issue with any kind of ammo I have used.

Get the Galloway trigger and hammer upgrade 70.00.
Shortens reset and reduces trigger pull.

you Will end up with a very nice weapon. As accurate as a Glock 26.

Remember a gun you are willing to carry every day is better than an expensive heavier gun that sits at home.

I have over 2000 in the one I bought no hiccups at all.
I purchased another for my female friend.

Now I have many other guns. Ruger security six, Glock 17L,
Ruger lcr 9mm, coonan 357 etc.

    My daily carry sccy cpx-2.

    JMHO....

I have had a few 2nd and 3rd Gen S&W's and always found them to be very fine and dependable weapons. They were the best of the 20th century for L.E.

Yup, that was the one I was thinking of. IF I remember right, they were both owned by guys with the last name of Carter, and the guy that owned E. Tx Ammo was a police chief the next town or two over. Sorry to hear of him, the Ponderosa guy, passing, and of the changes. Small town gun shops are falling off quick.

If he has those kinds of funds available, steer him towards a Sig P-365 or Glock, or what has been stated previously. Though your choice through AIM Surplus is a good one too. Either way, good luck.

I gave him one of my Makarovs (Russian built) last year and now he wants a second pistol. He has a 6 year old daughter and I'm not sure he's ready for a Glock just yet. I have a drawer full of those, but at this point something with an external safety may be the better option. I picked up an EC9s last year and one of those may work for his situation. As for the 6906, I had one when I lived in New England and really want another one but my gun funds are too low right now. That one, and the 3913, are two of the great ones. Paul Carter owned East TX Ammo and used to work with me at the Wood County S.O. After leaving the sheriff's dept. he did go to work briefly police chiefing in Como, I believe. You're certainly correct, very little future in small town gun shops. They just can't compete against the larger shops or the internet.

If an external safety is something that’s a must have, look at a ruger sr9e. It’s got an easy to operate yet firmly stays in place safety. Other than that it’s a reliable striker fired gun. Unlike it’s more expensive sr series, the e eliminated the loaded chamber indicator. I prefer this. It also has a good trigger. Not to mention the best thing about it is it’s a ruger. IMO they have become king of customer service.

I strongly urge you to at least give it a look and any member can shoot mine.

Heyas from down the road in Gladewater. My Son bought the CPX-2, only issue he had, was a mag with a weak spring. Contacted SCCY and they sent him two free mags. Right now, I believe he has 300 rnds through it and not a single issue. He has fired everything from Federal bulk aluminum case fmj's, to Blazer brass fmj's, to the hollow point carry rounds, feeds every time and goes bang every time. Might take a bit of time to get use to the heavy DA trigger, but once you do, it will shoot tight groups at 7-10 yrds.

Paul Carter owned East TX Ammo...

Yup, that was him, and you're right, it was Como. It was a bit of his nudging and a small amount of guidance that helped me get a job with the D.P.S. out in Midland. Not going to say that I really miss being out there too much, but, I do miss the East Texas Burger Company quite a bit.
