Damn, now I have to find me a dune buggy or build one. I sold my last one when the state basically outlawed it. But we did get a bone as sandrails can be driven in state parks now and on public land. I just want one to putter around parks when we go camping.

it does not exactly exclude the sand rail. It originally was all kit cars of any kind but at the end of the session in order to gain more support they had to limit sand rails to some streets and off road so you can register them now. And the group that changed the law says they will be fighting next session to get the rails fully included.

So far no "rules" have been set the group responsible for this law is going to start working with the DMV soon. The law takes effect 9/1 and as of this point no rules are set.

It has to be bolted back together the windshield is under the roll bars. The wipers are in a box of parts.

Seeing as all the new wiring is still in the package I doubt any electrical stuff works.

Need a windshield and wipers. I'm guessing the turn signals work?

The rules have not been made yet so no one really knows.

It is speculated that if its a tube frame its going to be considered a rail. so will have limited street access. Lots are hoping that shells over tubes will be ok.

In my book I would take a welded tube frame over a fiberglass body bolted to 1963 running gear with 4 wheel drum brakes but that is just me.

Sand rail + bodywork = dune buggy...?

Does anyone still make those replacement VW pans? That's not as good as a proper tube frame but they can still be pretty dadgum good.

    To All,

While not a dune buggy or a sand-rail, I'm gathering up the parts to build a replica of a 1940s MORGAN 3-wheeler, using a modern motorcycle engine & shaft-drive.
(The complete plans for the pre-war/post-war cars are available on-line, btw.)

    Jay Leno owns a pair of 3-wheel Morgan cycle-cars. - A 1946 chain-drive original (with a 2-cylinder J.A.P. engine) & a "Morgan Sports" replica, which has an aluminum tube frame, aluminum body & a 1200CC Honda Goldwing engine/transmission.
(A Morgan Owner's Club member from CA, who has driven both cars, said, "The original is lightening quick to 100 MPH but the replica should be licensed by NASA." & "To 100+ MPH, the replica will outrun a Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster. Zero to 100MPH to a full stop in less than 10 seconds.")

Note: The replica weighs under 1200# & has 94HP. - A similar replica has consistently won in the UK's "hill climb trials".

    yours, satx

Well let him know as of 9/1 he should be able to register it again as an assembled vehicle as long as a certified master mechanic says its road worthy and depending how bad DMV twists the rules lol

A buddy lost the ability to register his Aerial Atom because of the law.
