I've heard the airline industry has people because there are air crew who will work for almost nothing to get the seat hours. Is that true?

Yes, to an extent. But that’s also dying on the vine right now with all the movement at the top of the chain (majors) due to the beginning of a 5-10yrs worth of retirements.

Right now, the airline industry is snatching up any mouth breather with the required qualifications as soon as they’re qualified, creating more turnover at the mid-tier commercial pilot operations; which, due to talent being poached to the next level means what used to be a 3-5 tenure is now dropping to a year or less.

Add to that the pilot factories are producing more students, so they need more instructors, giving competition for talent to the mid-tier commercial operations.

So, pay and QoL are rising; entry level regional airline gigs are paying close to $70K/ with $5K signing bonuses and retention bonuses, too.

Now, realize the cost of training is a college degree (de facto requirement) and the associated flying training which can be $30K-$100K+ depending on what path one takes to get there.

I consider it a non-issue considering alcohol is already legal and that hasn't impacted the available workforce that much. The legalization of marijuana won't cause any significant shortages of skilled labor as those individuals usually put their professions far ahead of their desire to get high!

I am curious as to how employers handle the issue of employees use of medical marijuana, I suspect it would be the same as any other prescription drug in that a certain amount of time must exist between its use and being on the job; but given the frequency some people have to use the stuff those restrictions may not be feasible. I expect it would end up being a non-qualifier.

Medical marijuana, as currently handled, is nothing more than backdoor legalization.

What other drugs do you know where there's no dosing guidelines, dosing schedule, no limits on strength? Doctor's who work in the MM business don't write a prescription, they write a permission slip.

I've been taking Tramadol or narcotics for many years. I was never told I couldn't take them and work.

There are laws and rules about drinking on the job, smoking pot recreationally, even if it's legalized will probably be the same.

Man if someone figures out a reliable way to test for pot like a breathalyzer or something that would detect if a person is under the influence of THC they will be RICH!!! Then it put pot in the same detectable realm of alcohol thus making it fare to those who wish to partake on their own time and it will make the current testing methods that only show that it has been used in the last 30 day (UA) or 90 days (HFT) obsolete.

Until some pothead claims “my doctor prescribed this, it’s medicine and you can’t fire me for taking medicine”
That is true, you cannot fire someone for taking a legal medication.

But you CAN fire them for lack of performance. You must (and should) make reasonable accommodations, but if they just can't do the job, they can be let go.

Thank God Texas a right to work state.

At the LA Ad agency I worked at, it took an act of god to fire someone.
It was a LOT of work.

And then they moved my job back to LA and I was fired in an instant LOL

Never met a angry or violant weedhead, but getting them to work is another story.

This is a horse-shit statement in my personal experience. While I will agree I’ve seen some pretty lazy pot smokers I’ve seen more lazy asses that don’t smoke pot. This is just another example of a stereotype that’s just not really that accurate but you go ahead and keep telling everyone how people who smoke pot are lazy. You see, lazy people are just lazy weather they smoke pot or not.

And yes, I can speak from experience although I haven’t smoked pot in many, many years. I look forward to the decriminalizing of pot. If I could make a choice right now I’d choose cannabis over alcohol every time.

I just speak from experiance I had over 20+ years working a seasonal job with them. And I'm not talking about the bong after work instead of an 18 pack.

The wake & bake crowd are the worse, because they tend to smoke all day long. The disappear for their mid morning buzz, the nooner, the mid after noon & the I made it thru the day now I need to get high before I leave for home. They tend to be a bit stupid as well as a weed head. You tell them don't do that shit here around work, yet you catch them. Worked with one who brought a pill bottle with 5-6 joints pre-rolled. I know this because the stupid shit never pealed the label off his pill bottle & had a habit of leaving it where he was getting hislast buzz.

Then there was wake & bake boy who was late every day because they had to watch I love Lucy before work while they got high. After getting paid he would buy better weed then get sleepy after getting his buzz on, during the work day. Funny how they pound down Red Bulls & Monsters or 5 Hour Energy because they had their pick me up buzz @ work.

Don't go telling me these to examples are not typical of free shit army liberal hippy commie weed heads. I don't have a drivers license because I owe child support & they can't track me by a license if I don't have one. These are the sam type idiots who want to be paid cash. They claim to be carpenters but don't even have their own tools. And even worse they are on the assistance for food & housing. They want $15.00-$20.00 per hour, cant keep track of their hours & are broke because a bag of high dollar drops is more important then paying debts. Oh even better they buy everything @ the dollar store or convince store because they are to paranoid to dive a few miles to shop a real store or it's to far to walk or pedal their bike.

Baboon you are alright. That last post is 100% accurate for a certain crowd but slackers exist in all forms & fashion. I can’t argue with you’re example. I’ve known those type as well. The free shit army! Lol. They are so real.

I'm not so sure about the first sentence.

Happens all the time in the oilfield. People apply, go to take a pre-employment UA, show the lab their prescriptions, and then they get a call, "Due to insurance requirements, we can't hire you while you are taking that/those prescriptions."

Never heard of anyone successfully saying, "Ok. I'll quit, take another ua in 2 weeks/a month/whenever," and being hired.

I also know of people who have lost their jobs after being prescribed legal meds. Same basic deal. You cannot be on an oil rig if you're on almost any narcotic, regardless of prescription situation.

Likewise, in Co and Ca, I don't know of any oil and gas companies that don't still make THC in urine a termination offense and/or won't hire if it's in the pre-employment ua.
