At one time I was a draft officer. Draftees would use the same trick to intentionally fail. Didn't work this, becasue the Doc would always trick them into hearing something and discard the hearing test.
I got my VA hearing aids based on my discharge physical hearing test.
Actually, this the recommended way to do it. Some states now mandate that you stay in your lane to the merge point. Nothing pisses me off more than a trucker trying to negate tips by blocking both lanes.
I love those truckers.
Nothing pisses me off more than some jerk flying past everyone that reads the sign then causing traffic to stop as they try to force their way in at the last second.

Alternate doing it each way. Keep track of the "finger count" for each. You can put me down for one virtual finger for the "blast past and hope someone lets me in later" technique.

Going to work one morning in Houston some jerk was driving on the line where 2 lanes merge. It was neat watching because the first car behind him was a Texas State Trooper. Didn't go well.

I like to do that. They are so focused on preventing someone from behind to use the other lane and forget about what is in front of them. Boy they get pissed when you just jump in.

The VA has kindly decided to give any Veteran with hearing problems hearing aids. Since hearing loss among Veteran's is much higher than the genpop this was a good thing.
I turned down VA hearing aids. They ask why and I told them my wife says I don't listen to her. I don't intend to start.
