I wonder why/how it was loaded in the first place. Store policy is firearms are checked and cleared at the door upon entry, they put their lock on it and give the owner a slip with make, model, SN, and list of what ever it's dress with. No ammunition is to accompany the unit unless you're going the range.

Stuff happens. I've had loaded firearms shopped to me before...

This is a prime example of what can happen when a person gets too confident working on or handling firearms. The people at the front door should have caught the fact that the rifle was loaded. They failed probably because the process had become routine for them.
Carrying the loaded rifle from the front door to the gunsmith put store shoppers at risk without their knowledge.
The gunsmith probably assumed the rifle had been cleared by the front check-in guys. He also failed to follow proper firearm safety procedures by not checking it before he began his work. Luckily he was only shot in the arm and not his head.
I have handled firearms of all kinds for over fifty three years. Everything at my house, except my carry weapon is unloaded and stored away. If someone is at my house and wants to look at one of my firearms, I catch myself starting to hand them something without checking to see if it is loaded. I know it was unloaded when I put it away, but the other person doesn't. Plus maybe I missed a round the last time I had the firearm out.
You can never be too careful.

    Gunz are icky.
A while back a similar situation occurred at Hot Wells shooting range.
A "gunsmith" had a rifle go off while working on it.
The bullet passed thru the building wall striking a customer in the parking area, killing him.

    We know it couldn't have been a 1911 .45.

He would've been vaporized if it were.
I was going to say, if it was a .45 it would have tore his arm off and spun him around.

It's hard enough to shoot yourself with a handgun, how the **** do you manage to aim a long rifle at yourself you haven't cleared and pull the trigger? I bet he's a real blast to work around.

I vaguely remember that. The 'gunsmith' was a young guy barely in his twenties, got charged with manslaughter and was facing 20-30 years.
He should have been a cute blonde cop.

I'm just the opposite. All of mine are loaded. Never any question about the condition.

Didn't bother to read the posts. Just wondering one thing?
How is Trump involved? Has anybody heard of someone that heard anything about this while on the phone?

I know a former Steel Challenge and IPSC champion that was a menace in the dove patch, muzzle sweeping, shooting in other hunters directions. There was also a former decorated Delta Force member that got warned by the RO and had to be read all the basic rules of shooting safety, keep the bolt open when the range was cold, stop sweeping the muzzle in people's faces. That guy was downright dangerous but because of his service and famous reputation, people didn't say anything at first.

I local gun range I have been to has a jar near the entrance to the range full of bullets where people said their gun was not loaded and turned out there was one in the chamber.

On the range I worked on, there was a collection box of screwups like a 30-06 round shot through a .270, a barrel peeled like a banana that was the result of someone trying to shoot a stuck cleaning patch out, grips that were blown off a 1911 frame from a double charged reload and other assorted kabooms.
