I know I’ve seen some folks mention Jeeps but don’t recall their area. Anyone from the SA area into Jeeps? Been thinking about taking a weekend out there and might like to hit the trails. The Jeep I will be driving is a 2006 LJ Rubicon that just got MetalCloak 3.5” springs and 35” KM2 tires.

Looks like the closest trails are about 1 1/2 hours further west.

When I moved from NM to SATX I sold mine due to having kids and lack of need for my jeep here.

Still have to swap the tires for driver’s side. I’m pulling them off my YJ (behind it) then putting new tires on that one.

Nice, I have an 05 LJ (non-Rubicon)...here's an old pic from ten years ago. It has new bumpers on fog lights on it, and I usually run a safari or bikini top on it with a windjammer and tonneau cover these days...

The LJ is perfect for kids!

Those "kids" are now 19 and 22, and still go out on adventures in the Jeep with me and the wife.

As for the "lack of a need for a Jeep here," we have been on numerous trips to some interesting places in ours. True, the lack of public land in Texas limits the number of places to wheel; but there are still great places in the Hill Country to get out and explore.

Of course, we had a Honda Odyssey for 13 years and I just bought the wife a Mazda CX-5; but I could never not have a Jeep in the garage. They are the consummate American adventure vehicle!

WTH, did YOU buy my 06 LJ????
Sir, I do believe yours was better built than this one when I bought it. This is my second LJR and my second choice in color. Previous LJR was also 06 but was Jeep Green Metallic. I’m not a fan of Beryl Green but it was the only one I found with manual and tan interior that was “green.” Purchased in 15 with 35k miles. Pretty sure what I paid in 15 was the same, or possibly more, than it sold for new. That sucks but these things are the best Jeeps ever made, with an exception given for the CJ-8.

Looks like the closest trails are about 1 1/2 hours further west.

I have been looking for places to go to get off the road and onto some trails. I was spoiled from living in NH, MT, and AK, and didn’t think TX had many overland/off road trails.

where are some decent dirt roads/trails? Driving a 4X4 Silverado, so not looking for Taco/Jeep goat trails.

    Any ideas appreciated.

Big Bend state park and natl park have nice easy trails. I here terlingua ranch has trails also. Must own property there or stay on property there to access it. If you like beach there’s PINS. Aside from that not much available as it’s all off-road parks and private property. Could always get a map and look for unimproved county roads and head out exploring. Some might be well maintained and others in poor condition.

    Thanks!

I’m also looking into East TX National Forests. I used to ride the Forest Service roads and trails for many miles in Montana and ID. I enjoy a “flow through” run, where we go in one way and come out on the other side of the area.

No longer looking for true “4 wheeling”, just enjoy getting off the pavement and beaten path.

    Thanks again!

Have you checked out expedition portal yet? If not head over there and look around. You’ll find trip reports and ideas. I think others have done the county road route there. Less wheeling and more camping/exploring minded.

There are some light dirt roads and trails between Helotes and Bandera, one goes by Polly's Chapel and follows Privilege Creek which is where the above pic with our two boys in the back was taken. We usually follow Old School Road north past the cemetery which will eventually pop out on Old Elm.

Ross Road (121) of 462 west of Hill Country State Natural Area and just south of Tarpley is also a nice drive with a crossing of Hondo Creek on the northern end.

Willow City Loop north of Fredericksburg, while paved, is still a scenic 13-mile stretch of Hill Country road over hills and valleys offering stunning views of creeks, meadows and yucca-filled cliffs.

Most of the time we just head out on the backroads of the Hill Country and look for interesting places to explore!
