We are completing the camera security this weekend. Just 3 more lines to run through the attic and hook it all up. It is easy to see the cameras by intent. WE have two property's next to each other with a common back yard. Every square inch is covered. I am adding cameras inside later to cover the safes. They will be hidden. Both systems (2 houses. daughter lives in one we are in the other) are cell phone accessible by them and us.
The doors are on pined hinges. The dead bolts and handle strikers have re-enforced receivers set into the house frame work. It will take some serious effort to un-hinge them. Steel security screen doors set up the same way.

Yes you could come through a window. But we are looking at the 3-M film product line to reinforce them as well. No fortress is impenetrable. But slowing them down is key. And as already mentioned a hardened target might deter.

Love the safe room, when it comes time to build the next house that's definitely going to be a component. Do you do anything for climate control in there, or is it more or less a sealed box?

Ac piped in and it has a spot to allow fresh air in and out. I am currently sitting in here studying for a promotional exam. Nice and quiet...

I.E. making your neighbors easier targets. Cameras are great. This weekend my brother in law was setting up cameras and we noticed that the cameras, when hit with bright sunlight, didn't set off the motion sensors all the time.

I also live in kind of a ghetto apartment complex (not too terrible but definitely not luxury) I rely on the fact that most people around here don't have nice shit in order to keep a low profile myself.

No place is 100% secure. The thing to remember is to delay them as much as possible. Make sure on your block you are the hardest house to break into. Don't advertise by setting out boxes of what you purchased. I even shred my mail with any information on it.

Where I live either they live out here or they're lost. Over 600' from the house to the gate and 8 cameras (with motion alert) recording 24x7 cover both houses. 18 motion lights in 3 zones and motion alarms at both gates. The house isn't impregnable but you can't get near it that I dont know well in advance. I work from home so I'm nearly always here, best I can do for now.

Are you from Canada? Just curious with the Whistler name. I've always wanted to ski there.

No it's a nickname pinned on me in my misspent youth by a well know motorcycle club because I whistled when I was "in the zone" playing pool to make my rent. Just stuck with me over the years.

No place is 100% secure. The thing to remember is to delay them as much as possible.

This is what our home security consultant told us, and we had to pay for his advice.

We had our house custom built with the "normal" security features (dog, lights, signs, cameras, fence, integrated security system, etc) but only 2 security features that might be considered uncommon. First, the master closet is a panic room -- nothing too crazy, but definitely would take time to breach and second is the downstairs windows.

We were recommended the 3M security film windows: https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/home-window-solutions-us/solutions/safety-security/.

They're not bulletproof, and they can also be breached, but it would take 15+ seconds of very loud & determined work, and that's really all we need. Plenty of time to wake up, realize what's going on, grab my gun, and get into a predetermined defensive position while the wife heads into the closet, locks the door and calls our lawyer.

Another important tip we were given: practice it at least a few times! Pretend it's actually happening, lay down in bed, start a timer on your cell phone, and pretend someone is breaking in through door X or window Y, and go through the motions. If you wear contacts and need to put them in, or keep your gun in a safe and need to retrieve it, or whatever, go through all those steps. You might be surprised by what you learn.

I’m going to install these on my doors.

Does nothing for the glass widows we have...that’s another problem waiting for a solution.

My door would fail way before that.
    Those are security doors.

Our exterior doors are old and solid wood. They’re heavy and would do ok, methinks.

I’m gonna also looking to the window security film mentioned in this necrothread.
