Do you clean and smoke it every time you use it?

I have used molds. Still need to learn how to make bullets.
just sent xdmikey a long PM with a lot more details. I'll copy it and send it to you as well. I didn't want to post it all here because I tend to be long winded...

If it's been longer than a week then I clean it. But then again I usually crank out 500-1000 across 2-4 sessions in a weekend then put the mold away for another few months. Haven't even cast anything in close to a year now.

I do smoke the mold every time. The only exception is if I cast a few hundred, then go do something else for a few hours, then come back. If I stop for the day and come back tomorrow I always smoke again.

For many years I looked forward to reloading for every caliber I could get dies for. I loved doing load development for my guns, and would load for a few close friends.

I had a weird moment recently. I was given a 224 Valkyrie upper recently. And decided I was just going to buy ammo for it instead of loading it. It will be the only gun I own that I don't load for.

I weighed my Hornady 6.5 mm 140 grn ELD match projectiles before Using them. This is why I don’t like Hornady projectiles. These “match” projectiles have a 0.5 grain spread in their weight.

I've weighed other boxes of projectiles and found 5.0gr difference. But for $30 a box Hornady isn't bad. I weighed about 150+ of the 162gr ELD-m 7mm. There was 100+ of them between 162.0, 162.1, and 162.2, with more being in the 162.1 box than the other 2. I had less than 10 between 161.7-161.9, I had about 10 at 162.3, and another 15 between 162.4-162.5.

So ya, you had better luck than me, but I haven't had that good of luck from nosler, Sierra, or Speer bullets.

I checked the weight on a box of SMK 175 grn ELD-X projectiles and only had 0.1 grains each direction from 175. I really prefer Berger projectiles but hate the price.

If you're interested in bullet casting I highly suggest reading http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Contents.htm

It's going to answer questions you didn't even know you had.

Lee can make a decent mold....once in a while. I prefer RCBS, NOE, MP, Accurate, and Arsenal.

The aluminum that Lee uses is a much softer alloy than what other companies use. It's much easier to gall the top because of this softer aluminum.

I've got over 100 molds right now. Mostly all pistol molds. My favorite is my MP eight cavity aluminum mold for a 125 gr TC bullet. It flat rains bullets.

If anyone in the DFW area wants to learn about casting I'm always welcome to help ya out.

I am by no means an expert. I am just a guy that taught myself. I am going to read that after the kids go to bed.

I just picked out one chapter where I thought I knew the subject matter and read it. The depth of knowledge and insight found there is hard to fathom.

That is a truly amazing resource.

I cannot thank you enough for that link. And I don't even cast bullets!

Have not forgot about your prior offer. Life got in the way, but I still have all my stuff sitting in my garage.

Jeez, after I ordered $90 worth of crap I found a bunch of it on arf's EE for less!

    oh well, what the hell.
We all say we got into reloading to save money. When you start casting, that's when you really start saving. So that $90 will be well spent!
