Forgive me for questioning anecdotal advice. Would like to know what the objection to Frog Lube is? Yeah, yeah, somebody said they heard somebody who saw somebody who swore that maybe somebody's guns didn't work right after they said they used Frog Lube. I've been using it for 5 or more years and never had a failure to fire, failure to eject or any other of those bad things. Most everything I have is Glocks, Remington's, Kel Tec 2K, Marlins, and one cheapo Taurus that rattles around in my fishing tackle box. Did I miss the federal recall announcement? I've still got an old bottle (probably 20 - 25 years old, of Hoppe's I could change back to. Plus two squeeze bottles of Tactical Honey and an Olive Drab can of Standard Oil of New Jersey labeled "may be carried in belt pack".. that dates from 1942. Still unopened. Open to documented advice on alternatives.

My experience with Frog Lube is pretty much like yours. I have used the paste on 2 Shields, an XDm, a Glock 17, Glock 20, M&P 2.0 compact, several AR 15s, a Mini 14, a 1006, Ruger 10/22, Ruger Mark I, S&W 39-2, and a Mossberg 590A1 with no problems. Despite the directions saying to wipe off the excess, I tend to leave on a pretty good coat of FL except for the internals.

But....I have not actually used any of those firearms in temperatures below 50° F. And I don't own a 1911. I have noticed that if left on thick for an extended period of time it will turn rancid.

......The correct amount of lube is barely visible and only in the appropriate places.
If you clean your ***** and look for and find spots where surfaces are rubbing against each other, then those are where lube goes.
Oils are not very good lubes (but are way better than nothing!).

    YES!!!
I respect and support your advice and live by it.
I learned it in high school.

So which one of our fine gentlemen called the shop today asking for Frog Lube? When told I don't carry it they asked why, I replied...because I don't carry it...

I was then informed how it was God's gift to firearms and chastised my blasphemy..........

    Fess up....................

All in all I thought it was a pretty funny exchange.....but didn't change my mind...

Anyone ever use Penn Reel grease to lube a gun? I have a large can of that stuff. I’m curious.

In my Bob Marvel 1911 builders class he had us put a drop of oil on the top of the barrel at the muzzle, a drop inside each side of the rear raceways of the slide and that was it. These are precision, hand fitted 1911s, but he said that's all it should need. The gun is smooth as silk.

In my experience working on customers guns, though, I've also seen that a lot of malfunctions are because they're ran dry as a bone and filthy.

In fact, my only Glock malfunction was from being filthy. So, there's something to be said for "clean gun" and maybe something else for "well lubricated". Also, lubrication may help slightly in reliability, but it'd also be interesting to see how it affect long term wear.

It's not like an engine running 100k miles at 3000 rpm+, so that's not a totally fair comparison. But when things like cycle speed, timing, etc are affected, maybe it does matter in it's own way. If a AR bolt is slightly sticky and just barely doesn't make it all the way back, you just took a good shooting AR and turned it into a jam-o-matic that doublefeeds or fails to eject maybe. Then again, an AK can supposedly be buried in mud and then dragged behind a camel, and it still shoots.

Probably works great, like lots of other stuff does. Any idea of what it's made of? A quick google didn't turn up much, but based on the marketing wank I'm guessing a PAO?

I think it might work really well. On my SAs I usually use a bit of grease on the slide rails. Gonna try it.

    Gunz are icky.
Honestly all I use is plain old RiG gun grease on the 1911’s.
A small dab in the slide rails, barrel lugs, and bushing.
Drop of oil on the firing pin.
    Mobil One on the AR’s.
