Real County appraisal district tried to raise my appraised value on my land over 250% last year. Just said screw 'em and sold it. Somebody else's problem now.

Not only is the tax painful, but it's not evenly distributed. Like someone said, a punishment for living in a nice place.

The politicians will say, "We lowered the tax rate!", but they just raise the valuation and wind up with more money every year.

I feel like a retired person, or someone like a disabled veteran should have a point where they can have one place to live on that's not taxed. But then again I feel like government could be cut to a far smaller size than it is right now and we'd all be better off.

Our house in Austin in 1974 market value value was 18000 with property tax of 150 dollars. Today they say the market value is 405000 and property tax if we were not frozen on school taxes last 14 years would be 11000. In 1974 150 dollars adjusted to todays monetary value is 782 dollars. So property value is 22.5 times as much and tax is 73.3 times as much..... Somethings very wrong here....

So renters are not paying the property tax in the form of a percentage of rent?

Be careful creating classes that fit YOUR specific situation. Because you can be classed right out of voting too.
You miss the point. Let's say someone owns a small apartment building, say 10 units. So something comes up to raise property taxes, or a rent control bill. The owner and his wife get two votes, the 10 couples get 20 votes, does that seem fair? And rent is based on what the market will bear, it is not some algorithm that takes into account property tax.

Buying property to live on that can be ag exempt helps, but it still requires property tax of some kind. 50 acres in Red River County costs around $60 per year in property taxes.

I hate you. I pay a lot more for a lot less. Really, I'm just jealous like Moonpie is of my Glock collection.

How much of a cut did the ISD take?

    The lion's share.

I don’t believe the individual ISDs should have the power to tax, as I believe the power of taxation is purely a governmental power that should not be delegatable nor extendable to non-government entities.

Well, ISD's are government entities and we can elect their board of directors and vote on their bonds & tax assessments. But I still agree with you that school taxes are crap.

In the grander sense, what does a reinvention of funding public goods and services look like?

Lota folks live - especially around the major metropolitan areas -where there’s an HOA also. I view that as yet “another” layer of government AND you get to pay for them directly!

One reason I have not moved to TX. We had been looking over the last few years. Wife was looking at nice houses, but when she saw the property tax amount her facial expression was priceless. Boy, property taxes are high across the state. Worst in AZ. My brother has been wanting us to move to IA. Property taxes there plus state tax is horrible, too.

I prefer WY, but that would be wishful thinking on my part.

Property taxes in Texas are high because there’s no state income tax. Property tax increases are capped at a limit of a 10% increase per one year - but that can still add up quickly (ouch!).

As I understand, there are a few places in Kansas that will actually “pay” you to move there - usually through some kind of “incentive” program (tax abatement, subsidized land or housing acquisition or improvements, etc.). Of course these are generally dying communities out in the middle of nowhere; bumf KS.

I lived in Commiefornia. State income tax is 10%, 8% state sales tax, personal tax on vehicles, state disability tax. Property tax was set at 1.25% of purchase price and could only raise 3% per year. I had a small place valued at 600K and taxes were just under 7K. Moved to TX, paycheck went up by $600 per month but taxes on a place at $270 are over 4k. About $2500 is for school tax for not havong any children attending. Overall my tax bill is less but still too much.

Politicians talk about creating new taxes to reduce the property tax. I vote against all new taxes, because they never keep the promise about reducing the old one (at least not for long).

If people would get involved in the school board races and bond elections, the school taxes (the biggest hit) could be kept in check or even reduced. Medium to large ISD's are loaded with administration, as the superintendent builds a kingdom. He then uses the size of his bureaucracy to justify a raise for himself.

Putting people on the school board who would insist on cutting bureaucracy and who would not rubber stamp everything the administrator put forward would help.

Personally, I think every little community should have an $85M high school football stadium like mine does (McKinney).
    :::: sarcasm off ::::

    The “voters” did this!

    Idiots.

(They like to quote the cost as less, but that fails to take into account the initial land acquisition cost which occurred earlier. And the additional cost of roadway & utility infrastructure - not part of the actual stadium construction.)
Heaven forbid that Allen or Katy, TX have a more expensive high school football field.
