Where are you going to shoot?
Sometimes that's a big factor in what you need.
This is a big one. Long range shooting spots have been getting scarce. If you don't have your own land or somewhere close by you will never get enough practice.

    These are valid points^^^

I'd like to add to this.

I don't look at long range criteria in yardage, but what is long for a caliber. If you can shoot a 4" plate @ 300yrds with a .17hmr consistently, I would consider that long range. Also, very impressive. Don't get hung up on going super long if you don't have the room or feel like taxing your budget. I will say the same for shooting the 22lr.

You can also learn a whole lot by shooting at 300 yards. In fact, most of what you need to shoot 1000 yards can be learned at 200-300. If it gets too easy, get smaller targets. I’ve burned a lot of powder just chasing my own groups.

Then you have a solid foundation to build on when/if it comes to reaching out further.

If you are doing that with a .17 HMR on anything but a dead calm day, you have definitely mastered the ability to read the wind, lol.

Tried it at 300 with Shasta cans and would consistently hit on one side or the other from very slight changes in the wind.

Shooting at long distance is not the same as shooting at 200 - 300 yards. Why? Because when the bullet goes trans-sonic from supersonic to subsonic it behaves differently. The effect of wind and Coriolis effect take on major effects on the trajectory. The really nice thing about my 45-70 load is a 535 grain bullet starts at 1100 fps and never really has a trans-sonic wall to deal with down range. There are several really good books about shooting at long range. Search the web and buy a couple

I didn’t say it was the same. I said you will get a good foundation to build on. Most of what it takes to shoot well at 1000 yards is also necessary to shoot well at 300 yards. And many common rounds will remain supersonic past 1000 yards including the inexpensive and readily available 6.5 Creedmoor.

Coriolis effect will be minimal at 1000 yards even shooting due north or south. Couple inches or so. The wind will have a much greater effect.

Learning to judge the wind well enough to stay in the center of the target and estimate its effects at 300 yards will help in doing the same at longer distances. Although there is still a learning curve. But it’s better to have an idea of what’s happening up close than trying to figure out what’s going on with variable winds downrange with no mastery at short range.

But most importantly, you have the ability to learn how to properly sight fire the rifle at a distance close enough that environmental factors won’t cover up your own shortcomings, while being long enough to actually see the effects of environmental factors.

So I stand by my statement that 200-300 yards is an excellent distance to shoot and build an excellent foundation for long range work.

Me too. Especially with any rimfire, winds play a big part of accuracy. More so the farther you go out. The only new thing you really have to learn is velocity drops and maybe coriolis effect for slower ammo and calibers that will go subsonic before they hit target. Depending on where you are, maybe up drafts and down drafts caused extreme heat.

200-300 is easy with a good ar10, 308. Heavier bullets for wind. 24" barrel 2700 fps. Change barrel to 7-08 for higher BC bullets. Heavy barrel profile. No gunsmith needed, use target stock, good trigger. You can even get single rnd mag.

morning, the army was looking at the 243win. and
6mm as a long range cartridge. the use of bullets
over 100gr bullets. the 6.5 sweed is a very good
long range cartridge. the granddaddy 308cal. is
very good. bolt guns r favored. semi can shoot as good
as a bolt with very good barrel, trigger and optics.
if u do not reload for urself, can get expensive.
    professional shooters have sponsors.
    the 300win, 338 lapua and 406 barrett r
for very long range shooting enjoyment.
a person can spend vast amounts of monies
in this sport. justme gbot tum

I'm probably one of the very few that disagrees with the rimfire philosophy considering the trends and innovations that are happening in that area. I feel like a person is better served with something like a 223 or similar that has some recoil and movement to help learn proper follow through and recoil management.

Get a bolt gun any caliber above 22-250 with a medium to heavy barrel.
    A 6mm, 6.5mm or 7mm will do
Better then a 308. Get a decent scope do Not skimp on the scope. $400 minimum depending on make and model. I would be looking in the $5-$700 myself.
This will get you going and not cost a lot should you not pursue any further. Get in deep and it will cost.
Don’t get crazy on power over clarity.
