I'm thinking of PopOS next time just so I can do some no-bother low-end gaming.

Seriously, I'm about to put a mini-ITX mobo, an AMD 3400G, 16 gigs of ram, and a leftover SS drive into a used Silverstone SFF case with PS that I have lying around. It'll be a very un-special little computer but now that I no longer treat my computer as a hobby, I don't need anything better. It should be a perfect candidate for PopOS.

Most softwares are no longer supporting Win7.
I've encountered a little of that... Been able to work around it so far. If it's something really popular there's probably already a published hack for it.

If Win7 really does become unworkable, then the wife is just going to have to learn nix... Who knows; maybe MS will pull their heads out of the asses and Win13 will be alright.

There will be no Win 13. Windows 10 is it. We're currently on build 1909 and 2003 is due in 4 months. They do what Linux does, they publish two builds a year.

Sure if you're part of MSDN you can be on that version ;-) Public release will be April at the earliest :-p

I REALLY like to know what issues might crop up months or years before I see them in production so I can either know the fix when I encounter them or prevent them from cropping up in first place.

Anyway, for the absolute beginner in Linux, and most people won't ever need more than that, incant recommend Mint / Cinnamon enough.

On the other hand, you can really do some damage with Kali.

For servers with specific purposes, CentOS is what I've been using a lot. Hate it but it gets the job done.

That did not go so well. Boots off the SSD when connected by USB. Get the recovery disk needed message when the SSD is in the laptop.

Take 2; HDD via usb to make a recovery disk.

It amazes me the Windows boot process is still stuck in the 1990's.

Quick update. Amazon delivered a 512gb SSD yesterday. Cloned it last night and will install today. I figure I’ll try a $40 interim solution until I can figure out what I really want

I did that about 3 years ago with a laptop we had. Was hoping to get another year out of it.

With the SSD it’s fast enough for what we do, and we’re still rocking it.

Seems hardware doesn’t get obsolete as quickly as in years past.

Eh? What were you using to clone the disk? I never had such issues with Acronis True Image. Boot from the Acronis media, select "tools, clone disks", select source and target, go. Swap drives, ready to roll.
