How long are licensees required to maintain ATF Forms 4473?

Licensees shall retain each ATF Form 4473 for a period of not less than 20 years after the date of sale or disposition. Where a licensee has initiated a National Instant Background Check System (NICS) check for a proposed firearms transaction, but the sale, delivery, or transfer of the firearm is not made, the licensee shall record any transaction number on the Form 4473, and retain the Form 4473 for a period of not less than 5 years after the date of the NICS inquiry.

That is the rule today, in 1976 it was 5 years and there was no such thing as NICS.

If your referring to me, I didn't keep any records. I was wondering what the retailer kept and would the state or some agency be aware that I owned that gun, being that far back in time. Not for a friend, I actually own the gun. More curious than anything. Thanks guys for all responses.

Answers given here have been incomplete at best. There is no legal registry of firearms transfers to the ultimate owner EXCEPT the form 4473 and bound book of the FFL. And THAT form remains with the transferror (FFL who did the transfer) until cancellation of the license (retirement, closing the business, etc). THEN the 4473s and bound book(s) are transferred to the ATFE. Only then does the ATF have record of exactly what was transferred. These records are the only thing that record the exact firearm(s) transferred, when and to whom.

My answer fully and completely answered his question:

Q: Example: If I bought a pistol in 1976 at a sporting goods store, would the state have records for the sale?
A: The State of Texas has no records on this at all. Ever.

And THAT form remains with the transferror (FFL who did the transfer) until cancellation of the license (retirement, closing the business, etc).

    Your answer is factually incorrect.

4473's can be destroyed by the FFL after 20 years (if the business stays open that long)......
