I recently picked up a Marlin lever in 45-70 and am looking at ammo types. I would like to be able to get some off the shelf locally, but really want the 405 grain bullet. I know the leverevolution is available locally, but it comes in I think either 250 or 300gn. I found online the Privi Partisan for around $16 a box online for the 405 grain semi jacketed HP. Tempted to just order a case of that. Anyone have any experience with it?

Most of your factory loaded ammo, Remington, Winchester Super X, Black Hills etc. will be loaded to the old black powder specs because there are so many of the old trap door rifles still in circulation. If you're looking for hotter factory ammo, you can try Hornady Leverevolution, Underwood, and Buffalo Bore. Most people shooting 45-70 are rolling their own to get the most out of them and drastically reduce the price per round. When reloading, most manuals have 3 different 45-70 sections: 45-70 Government for Trapdoors, 45-70 for Lever Actions, and 45-70 for Ruger #1's and Bolt Action rifles. Good luck with it and enjoy your 45-70, it's a really fun and forgiving round to experiment with.

    TXStetson nailed it...

I was going to ask what the intended purpose is for the ammo- there are rounds that are intended for Grizzly bears (Alaskan guide gun) for example...

It's a very versatile cartridge with a wide range of projectiles available

405 gr flat base hard cast w/ SPG lube and 68/70 Gr (by volume) of FFg. Everyone at the range will come to see what made all the smoke.

Thank you for everyone's input. I don't have a reloading setup, so that option is out--though I fully understand it would be much cheaper.

I should have mentioned--mainly will be used for hog hunting. We see everything from piglet size to large boars. I may try a box of leverevolution to see how it goes. The Marlin I picked up came with an old Leopold scope, and most shots will be at 125yds or less.

Check the eye relief needed on that scope. With the significant recoil of 45-70, you could get a black eye with many scopes.

Mine has a "scout scope" with a very generous eye relief.

oh that is a very good idea. I hadn't thought of that. I was a bit leery of getting the rifle due to the possible recoil, but most of what I read online was that it was a good push on the shoulder, but not a sharp whack.

What do most of yall think about perceived recoil?

It honestly depends on the ammo- As was spelled out by TXStetson, standard off-the-shelf ammo isn't too bad, significantly more with Hornady Leverevolution, Underwood, Buffalo Bore- or other +P ammo.

Recoil is somewhat subjective- I'm not very recoil sensitive- but I can tell you my 13yo son can handle even the +P ammo, but prefers the lower recoil ammo.
