The Venezuelan Navy offshore patrol vessel Naiguata was sent to intercept a lowly cruise ship and force it into port. The navy vessel fired several shots across the bow and then started ramming the ship attempting to turn it to port.

Turns out the cruise ship was built for heavy ice with an extremely reinforced bow.

The cruise ship was undamaged while the navy ship sunk itself.

The cruise ship stayed in the area till help arrived and tried to offer aid but the navy ignored any further offers of help.

    Butthurt I guess. Lol.

Cruise ship was 400 ft 8500 tons so not huge by cruise ship standards. Actual damage.

By patrol boat the mean small destroyer/littoral type ship built in 2009. Ouch. 1459 tons 260 ft long. Small crew though. Less than 75 so very small destroyerish I guess. Pic of sister ship, hard to get actual pic of sunk ship I guess.

The Naiguatá (GC-23) was built by Navantia in Cadiz, Spain starting in 2008; so it's a relatively modern littoral patrol boat.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused the captain of the cruise ship of "terrorism," adding later that he did not rule out that RCGS Resolute was "carrying mercenaries to attack onland military bases."

Speaking of south of our border navies, anyone remember Argentina's General Belgrano?

Britain sunk it in the Falkland war.

We either sold it or gave it to them.

It was a WW2, wooden plank air craft carrier. Rather a moth eaten, elderly ship........

It was their pride and joy, though I wondered why in the hell, it was named for a General, who as most know General's aren't Navy?

And, I wasn't interested enough to research it...still not, but Navies of 3rd countries are kinda humorous, though their pilots are skilled.

There you go! Once again Emperor Maduro got it right! We need to send Bernie down to back this guy up and help him fight terrorist cruise ships. Well, we just need to send Bernie anywhere!

Belgrano wasn't a carrier - it was the former USS Phoenix, a Brooklyn-class cruiser. Sort of a lightly armored small battleship - but it did have wooden plank decks. And it was present at Pearl Harbor - kind of a sad end for a ship with that history, but hey, it's better than being turned into cans for green beans.

Some of these "Navies" are the pride and joy of their respective countries but a joke to us. We got boarded in Santo Domingo by the Dominican Navy's only Destroyer. It was clearly a WWII surplus Item and by far the largest ship in their fleet (at about 250' LOA). I didn't understand their pride in such a piece of crap until I saw the rest of their fleet. A hodge-podge of old oil field supply vessels from the '70s with .50 cal and occasionally 20 or 25mm deck guns.

    GZ,

I was basing what the lame stream media said at the time...so.......

I also recall the media reporting 1500 or so sailors went down with the ship. I would guess that number to be greatly exaggerated if it wasn't a carrier.

The Brits got paid back by the Argentine air force who sunk 4/5 Brit ships with Exocet missiles.
