I have a pecan tree in my backyard that’s about 6’ tall. I have a 2nd diameter hole dug out around the base and a transplant hole dug and ready. My question is, should I cut the supporting roots around the taproot, to get it out? Don’t wanna do all this work for it to die

    Out here by the lake!
I think your late to be trying it. Not that pecans trees go dormant, but you want to transplant when the trees has most its sap in the tree itself. Now it's producing pollen & planning growth.

Pecans are really hard to transplant. What you probably need to do is cut the taproot a couple of feet down, wait a year, then dig around it and pull it. As it is now, you probably want to fill that hole back in, wait a year, cut the taproot, wait a year, then transplant it. But it will probably be too big to transplant by yourself by then.

I went ahead and pulled the roots I could and cut any I couldn’t. I pulled the tree just fine otherwise. If it survives the week, I’ll call it a success
I didn’t pay for the tree obviously so I’d only lose out on time and effort otherwise
