Most people don't have a clue about the differences in Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day.

Hell, most of 'em can't even find the U.S.A. on a global map.

Memorial Day is one of those odd ones - "Happy Memorial Day" doesn't make sense, because I know what the day means. But sadly, to the average American, Memorial Day is just "happy first unofficial day of summer" and thus the celebratory, light hearted nature I think that email was trying to purvey.

My dad is a USAF vet, we have a good friend who is a Marine who served over seas - Veterans day and AF day are the easy ones. Memorial Day is that weird one because you never know what the right way to address the day is "Have a somber Memorial Day" just sounds strange.

I wouldn't get torqued off at PA for the email. Sounds like a total Karen who would've gotten so bent over it that it required a follow up email and apology.

What's wrong with being happy? When I'm gone and people are remembering me I want them to be laughing and having a good time, not being all melancholy and shit.

They got it right, but still not got the least bit bothered by the PA message.

I always tell my dad that I am eternally grateful to celebrate Veterans Day with him instead of observing Memorial Day for him. (He was shot down in Cambodia in 1969, and he and his crew spent 8 hours on the ground, in a very active spot. When you were caught there, you did not become a POW, you were KIA and listed officially as MIA)

Appreciate the correction but honestly didn't notice the first one. Makes me uncomfortable to be thanked, too many others gave too much when all I risked was my liver. Once washed some nuke protesters off the anchor chain with a fire hose, as close as I came to conflict of any sort.

I actually had a family member get pissed off at me when I very nicely corrected them for sending me a thank you text on Memorial Day.

I told them thank you for the kind words, but Memorial Day is set aside for military folks who died in the line of duty.
They fired back and said it was also for thanking veterans.

So put me in the group of vets that feels weird about people thanking me on Memorial Day. Their hearts are in the right place and I appreciate it but want to remind them what Memorial Day is for. It makes me feel weird, sort of guilty when someone says thank you to me on Memorial Day.

In these times of social justice warriors and Karens, it's good to see any praise to those who served. They used to teach civility in schools, now it's taught to respect those who can call themselves the most marginal.

Every time I stand for the flag I remember those who gave their all defending it, Memorial Day is the day I kneel to them.

There is nothing wrong with being happy on memorial day. Im sure most who we memorialize would want us to be happy and BBQ with our families.

Last year i spent the day at the veterans cemetery in Houston. Really moving and emotional experience.
    That being said
I wouldnt want my family to remember how i died, or whatever circumstances surround my demise. I hope my kids celebrate my life.
Go shooting, BBQ, spend time together. Don't go cry on my headstone.

Give your Dad a tip of the hat and Howdy from me, because of a very similar experience.

Bell Ranger pilot and I were re-conning a position for M101A1's to support an ARVN Cambodian operation when we lost our tail rotor to 51. radar guided MG fire. We were on the ground for only 45 minutes before being picked up ... damn asshats picked up our chopper first. We were both figuring out how to walk, barefoot, to Hanoi ...

Except for the uncertain birth of our youngest daughter, which took 36 hours, the longest time period in my life.

The pilot, Pete Behrens was killed a few weeks later in the same bird. Refugee from East Germany, gave his life for his adopted country.

Good thread to once again say RIP in Pete ...

I will pass on the hat tip to dad.

He flew UH-1‘s for the 20th SOS (Green Hornets) I know that was a year in his life that he wanted to get back.

As a former reservist, I’d say it was probably some pissy reservist or NG that got butthurt because they only mentioned veterans and active duty.
