Okay ladies and gentlemen, my cousin wants to buy his first AR-15. I have not really had much interest in AR's lately. I would like some recommendation's if you please, his budget is $800 to $1000. He wants to use this for some hog hunting on his land and personal defense. His prior experience is with lever guns, bolts and some pistols. Any help is appreciated. TIA

Pretty much any of them. In 5.56.
They do what they're designed to do.
    Ammo matters more.
If he can handle a lever gun with open sights, an AR 15 will be a cinch. If he's want for optical magnification, spend a couple hundred on a fixed 4 or 6 power.
Tell him to figure on getting another soon. Or several.

The colts back at a grand.
Best investment for that price point
Depends on which Colt. Not all of them are built to the same specification anymore. Long debate on that and many videos with comparisons. I have a Colt and like it a lot. There are lighter models for sure.

BCM is really good, but has a price tag to match. Palmetto State Armory is also really good and is priced lower. He could build one with Anderson upper and lower kits. Lots of options in that range, but may be best in the upper range for quality components that are mill spec plus.

He has a few options. Sounds like for general purpose, a 16" in either carbine or mid length gas system would be the way to go for him.

He just missed the Memorial Day sales but here are a few options:

    Spikes Tactical Carbine $877.50:

Ruger Optics Ready Carbine $519.99, leaves enough for an optic and still be in budget:

Ruger MPR $749.99, a little more than the above and an 18" barrel but has some good features for the price and is rifle gas so it's a softer shooter:

    S&W M&P Sport II w/Red Dot Optic $599.99:

In summary, hard to go wrong with a Ruger or S&W M&P Sport II. I'm hesitant to recommend PSA to...well anyone...but they are an option also. He could also buy a complete upper and lower and put them together and save some money.

First off tell him "Don't do it!" They are addictive and you wind up spending thousands on different parts/new guns ect… For shooting hogs I would look into a 6.5 Grendel Ar. Little more umph to put the piggies down and it will allow you to shoot some long range targets for fun.
Building your own isn't hard and can be a lot of fun as well. I would stay FAR AWAY from anything that says Bear Creek Arsenal on it.

My recommendation, that budget should just be for the rifle. A decent optic is going to cost half that at least.

BCM (upper only), spikes, are good options in that price range. SOLGW and sionics are in that relm as well, but i have no experience with them

    Aero is ok

Larue UU + lower of your choice will be at the top of the budget, and gives you a few options as far as caliber, barrel length, etc

He would like to stay with 5.56/.223 he traded into a couple thousand round so he has the plinking covered.
I personally have a colt and an older bushmaster(purchased to mount a slide stock on at the time for S&G's at the time) and a Knight's Armament in .308. Funny how that inexpensive Bushmaster never failed me.

I think I will head him in the Ruger direction, he has a couple of Ruger handguns and trusts those. Optics, I will probably give him an older Nikon I have here to start him out with. This will get him started until he can acquire more funds. Thanks to everyone!

If going Ruger AR, I suggest looking at the AR556 MPR. Lots of up grades for not much more cash.
