    Hey TGT gang!

A friend of mine in Canada asked for some help with his S&W Mod 17 22lr.

He was out shooting and after about 200 rounds, he loaded another cylinder and when he cocked the hammer to make ready for single action, the hammer wouldn't lock.

Second try, hammer locks, trigger pulls... hammer stays locked and no bang...

    Tries to open cylinder, stuck.

    Tries to decock hammer, stuck.

He removed the grip and did not notice any excessive fouling or anything generally out of place.

He hasn't gone any further toward disassembly at the moment, especially with a full load.

Anyone seen or experienced something like this? Any probable causes or troubleshooting advice?

Thanks in advance for reading the lengthy description and sharing your insights.

Tell him to check to make sure the ejector rod isn’t unscrewed. I had a lockup on my Model 67 and that was the culprit. Easy fix if that’s his problem.

I seem to remember the ejector rod has left handed threads.

    Gunz are icky.
Sounds like the cylinder ejection rod has backed out.
See if you can turn it with the tip of a non marring tool.
Your cylinder is locked in place so you'll have to work the knurled tip of the ejector rod.

If there are live rounds in the gun carefully remove the mainspring.
Be very careful. Place something so the hammer can't drop onto the firing pin.
Removing the mainspring will take the tension off the hammer.
He can probably slide the hammer up and off its rotation pin.
If you can get it clear you should be able to move the locking lug downward enough to get the cylinder open.

Here is a picture of what it should look like. Different hammer. Ejection rod backing out sounds plausible.

I'd also look for trash or unburned powder underneath the ejector star. This and buildup between the cylinder face and forcing cone. Build up is common on a rimfire revolver.

Thanks for the pic @rotor and the additional advice @Geezer !

Going to be a week or so before I hear anything else, my buddy went in for a minor surgery today so no further troubleshooting it's expect for a bit.

I appreciate you all and for sure @Moonpie, safety is paramount! Aside from simply not being a bumbling idiot toward one's own health, being a Canadian gun owner... definitely a citizen in their minority... my buddy wants to give zero reason for his fellow Canucks to believe they are just in their pursuit of restricting the ownership of firearms.

Will check back once I know more!

    Regards
