My advise would be to spend $500-$600 on a decent AR from any of the big names like Aero, PSA, Ruger, S&W, ect, spend $80 on a LaRue MBT-2S trigger (FAR nicer than a milspec trigger), and spend the rest on a decent optic. I'd either get a red dot with a magnifier to go along with it, or a 1-6x scope like what Vortex and Primary Arms sells. Fixed power scopes and those that can't go down to a really low magnification kinda suck for home defense. A scope that can go down to 1x will be easier to use in cramped spaces. I have guns set up both of these ways. I actually kind of prefer the 1-6x scope (Vortex Strike Eagle) due to it's simplicity, and the fact that I don't have a magnifier hanging off the side of the rifle when I don't want the magnification. It's not that big of a deal though. If your buddy is used to shooting with just irons, a red dot alone would serve him well. The Holosun HS503CU is a wonderful little red dot with a lot of really nice features on it. They're relatively cheap too.

@Maverick44, he uses scoped and irons. He just has never used an AR, I plan to let him try mine first. He does not like the mini-14. He had traded into one, got rid of it as fast as he could for a Benelli, I think that is spelled correctly, not really much into shotguns.

That's a good plan. I feel like most that actually get their hands on an AR and shoot it end up liking it, but there are a few who don't. If he does decide to get an AR, I cannot recommend that LaRue trigger enough. It really does make a big difference over the milspec trigger.

What sort of issues does PSA have?

I don't hear much about Armalite but on paper they look like decent entry level rifle. Any thoughts on Armalite?

04-16 USMC. Met a Major who consistently shot 245+ on KD range. (Before Table 2 was introduced.) If he could take a different FN rifle every couple of years, use M855, and year after year, shoot that well, I’ll take mil-spec. Is it sub MOA, no. Minute of man out to 500yds, mostly with iron sights, heck yeah!

In my opinion Armalite makes good stuff but you pay a bit extra for their name on it. They aren't anything special but just cost a bit more than comparable rifles.

Also in my opinion PSA is the new DPMS. They make a shit ton of entry level rifles that are affordable and do the job. But when you put that many rifles on the market you are going to have some problems. Keep in mind the guys having issues are much louder than the way higher percentage of users that don't have any issues. You generally only hear the complaints and not the praise.

This Truth About Guns article about PSA ARs is spot on.

Yup. Barrel/extension/bolt makes the difference, The rest is fit & finish. I get a chuckle from the chart. Pay the high price if you want, Or just enlist and get a good one to use. Mil-spec? Which milspec? Tons of milspecs, dimension, process, coatings, inspection. A one-armed monkey can put them together.
I got DPMS 308 (real DPMS) no problems. Plus Aero upper, delton uppers, Kak cheap barrel, Anderson lowers, no problem -all are accurate. Triggers - get a good one. You are NOT going to do a 1000 rnd full auto heat test! Nor crawl thru the jungle with it. Get a Ruger 9friend has a RRA & Ruger - they both work well), make your own, whatever. Customer service/warranty repair is important. I did shoot GS's PSA, it worked fine.
Polymer lowers - only real problem is the buffer tube attachment point - lots of stress there. Nobody makes one with metal attachment points at any substantial price savings. Dimensional problems can be fixed with machining.

What ever you decide a good trigger makes it much more enjoyable to shoot. I'm a big fan of the cartridge drop in triggers. CMC and POF are two that I've shot a lot with and both are excellent. I just got in a Rise Armament Rave 140 trigger and it is ok. Still much better then milspec but no where near CMC.

CMC is the best single stage trigger I have ever seen. Easy install. Incredibly crisp break with no creep.

    Good value.

Well he went ahead without me, purchased an Anderson at one of the LGS. Less than $800 with a Vortex optic. Not sure which one. He seems happy, has not fired it yet.
