The true Texas Yellowjacket builds its nests in the ground. The yellow wasps we see building nests under eaves are called Paper wasps, but are understandably confused with Yellowjackets.

I don't know about "true Texas Yellowjackets" but we get the Southern and Eastern yellow jacket species here and while they are commonly found in underground nests, not all are, such as the Southern Yellow Jacket which may be found in disturbed areas, in the walls of homes, eaves, under picnic tables, etc.

You can get 12 cans of wasp spray on Amazon for $70, this is the one that works best. Occasionally I set off bug bombs in the shop when the wasps get too bad, works for 2-3 months.

Gotta disagree with you there. Raid is effective, but Hot Shot works better and Black Flag (if you can find it) is the best - it'll kill them instantly if you hit them while they're flying, and it'll wipe a nest out with no problem. Never buy anything less than Raid, though.

Spectracide is about like buying the little bastards a couple of beers. They get a little tipsy, then they want to fight you. Avoid that brand. Ask me now I know...

I knew an old man who was one of those hardscrabble dgaf types. If he spotted a nest he could reach, he'd just grab it barehanded and squeeze. "A couple got me, but i got a bunch of them" he'd say. Throw the icky mess on the ground, wipe his hand off on his coveralls and go on about his business.
He was one of a kind.

Must be certain formulations, the Hotshot and Black Flag I used they just fly away, the Raid makes them drop. Can't say about the midair, I'm not that fast anymore. I can empathize with trying something that just pisses them off though.

Reminds me when I was a kid about 10, my dad had me cutting the ditches with one of those serrated sickles. Hit one of those big paper nests, those hornets lit me up and chased me all the way to the garage.

I came back with a can of gasoline, must have poured 2 gallons in that ditch. Just as I touched it off dad came down the road from work... That ass whipping was worse than the hornets.

Met an old guy like that in NC, had fingers like sausages but he'd just grab the nest and squash it. Only one I ever saw do that.
