Starting to look for places in the burbs of Houston. Looking specifically in the NW quadrant within 30 minutes of Tomball, as my dad & I will be working together and I'd like to keep commute times reasonable.

So far we've looked (online only of course) at places in Spring, The Woodlands, Tomball, Magnolia, Hockley, Montgomery, Conroe, and Pinehurst. We had looked at some beautiful properties NE of Houston, but those are just too far for reasonable travel times - some really nice properties for sale between Cleveland and Humble, or out east by Dayton and Huffman.

My pops has told me that Montgomery and Conroe have more than their fair share of meth heads and police raids - whats the skinny on that? True or just perception? I kind of like the notion of being close to Lake Conroe.

Are there neighborhoods or towns we're better off steering clear of? I am kind of wanting to be in Montgomery County, my dad likes being in Harris County because its better for doing resale business and aside from "that little nazi bitch judge" he likes Harris county. My grandma lives out in the Magnolia area, and it looked pretty nice out there. I'm liking the idea of lower taxes in Montgomery vs Harris county.

May god have mercy on you.
As @Spcwolf has said it’s way to crowded around here. Don’t forget Montgomery county is the fastest growing spot in the US, so it’s only going to get worse. I honestly wish I could move far far away.

@EZ-E where are you headed to?

Up near Athens...just got 13.9 acres at the beginning of the year. Along with a new job offer.

Yeah futher out would be cool - lower prices, more property etc - but we're looking within 30 or so minutes of Tomball because my dad and I are going to be running a business venture together, and he's more or less stuck in Tomball for 4 years as my little sister will be entering her freshman year of HS next year, and he doens't want to yank her out of school again and take her away from her friends. He was in the Air Force and they moved a good bit when she was younger.

I saw some gorgeous properties up near Cleveland, or out by Dayton & Huffman but the commute would be a pain.

The infrastructure is lacking for the volume of people moving into the areas you mention. I see taxes going apeshit crazy to pay for it. Those new to the Houston area need to understand the evolution of road construction. I moved to Houston in 1982 & the roads just keep needing upgrades. Anyone who is going to be comuting for work needs to be woke about this. Then add in the flooding.

I get it, but still need the skinny on the areas in question, as areas further out either toward College Station or San Antonio are just out of the question at the moment. I've been looking in Montgomery, Harris, Waller, and Washington counties but Harris & Montgomery are the primary as they're the ones within that 20 mile / 30 minute ideal window.

My pops has told me to avoid the cities of Montgomery and Conroe due to them being very methy - but I'm not sure if this is anecdotal perception or are they really methville? He also said something about Willis being known for very rednecky - but that's not necessarily a bad thing to me, unless my neighbors like to blast Free Bird at 3AM while revving up their Firebird or their Harley. I don't mind rednecks because I are one in some ways ;) but then Willis is way further north than I'd like to be right now. He said Cut and Shoot lives up to its name.

Basically I'd like to stay north of I-10, east of 159, and south of 105 and no further east than say, Spring

    Montgomery is not methy.
Conroe is so damn big you cant really label it. I mean Are we talking SH 242 or Panorama Villiage? Bentwater or High Line road?
If I were in your position, I would be looking forward n the Plantersville area.

Conroe has moved so far out, and is so built up, you can't tell when you left Conroe and start into Houston!

Would Plantersville, Todd Mission or Magnolia be to far out for you?

Have looked at Plantersville, haven't seen Todd Mission properties cross the radar yet. Magnolia is certainly in the bounds - thats where my Grandma lived (actually she's closer to "Karen" than Magnolia proper, per the map)

I've liked more of the Montgomery County properties I've seen than Harris County, as far as the more rural properties, but that's probably because there's more of them that are in our price range. I also like the fact that Montgomery has a lower property tax rate than Harris.

I know a couple of people that live on lake Conroe...One on the west side of the lake in Montgomery County (I believe), with a kid going to the Montgomery school and parent working in the school. Also one closer to Conroe, being a retired postal worker and enjoying her location to the lake. I have no actual experience in the two locations mentioned but I did live in Willis for 4ish months in 2009. Willis was crack or meth central and I have too many stupid stories that come from living there, briefly. Tomball was considered good ole boy territory for me, did some work on the high school there.

What about Richmond and Rosenburg? I haven't been down there in several years now, and I have a cousin that still owns land in Rosenburg that she leases for cotton farming. Use to be a really nice area with lots of farming and still sort of rural but close enough to Houston.
