I did it almost 15 years ago now. Got fast internet (350 download speed) and added HULU and Netflix.

Paying roughly half of what I used to pay for cable.

We have been a year without cable, don't miss it, especially the bills. We use Hulu and Netflix for our entertainment

I will be moving to the country but unfortunately will have to pay for satellite internet. Wife works from home. Any recommendations?

I’m going to try my best to keep tv out of the home. I got my property to work and live in a small population. My son has more fun in country. Kids get cooped up too much in the city.

Cut my Dish/DirectTV service years ago and started using the Amazon Fire Stick. Figured that since the video stuff was included with the Prime membership that I might as well. Just added the Sling service to it earlier this year. Overall, the combination of those, and over the air tv, it's not too bad. It's really only on for background noise and local news/weather anyway. And the occasional movie or gun related program.

Now, IF Windstream would finally do something about the internet service to make it reliable, this would be a good setup. Until they do...

I think that's the first mention of over the air tv in this thread. The new digital standard OTA (Remember when everyone was scrambling to get the decoder boxes?) was supposed to provide all sorts of channels between the channels and really disrupt the industry. However, I haven't heard anybody raving about it.

Has anybody here really explored the OTA options and what do you think? For example, Amazon came out with their OTA DVR a while back and it has a few competitors from Tivo and others. Anybody have experience with one of those?

My only experience so far is with the HughesNet satellite internet. It's not perfect, but overall, we are happy with the service, and the savings over the DSL we did have. Like satellite TV, if it's raining really hard, or heavy cloud cover, you can lose the satellite signal. Depending upon the package, depends on how much bandwidth you can use a month. When it get low, it will buffer quite a bit on watching videos, or streaming services on TV. Internet, it doesn't seem to nother too much. It slows down a bit, but is still useable.

We tried one a few years ago. Didn't work at all for us at all. We tried it with a couple of different attennas but still didn't work.

I guess we live too far rural for us to get any channels.

Some things to remember. The first two years, you are leasing the equipment as part of the contract. That is included in your monthly billing with your service fees. After two years, you own the equipment, and those leasing fees drop off and you are only paying for the service fees.

We did upgrade to a larger bandwidth package some months ago, and our monthly service bill is about $74.

There might be fixed wireless in the area. You can try to look it up here: https://broadbandnow.com/Texas

I like the sub-channels better than the main ones. Create for PBS has lots of good programming. MeTV is great for a Hogan's Heros fix. I forget the name of the channel, but there's one that shows lots of Modern Marvels. For awhile Laff was showing Night Court and Married With Children, but now they've switched to Home Improvement :(

In addtion to getting HULU and Netflix, I put an antenna in my attic, and connected it to the cable connection that runs into the house. I added an electric booster to it. I get about 30 channels or more. Its kind of cool that it picks up the sub channels. For exaample, Channel 11 gets I think 4 extra channels. 11, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4.

One of the benefits of cord cutting is reducing the funding for many of the left/left leaning channels. ESPN is really hurting for funds with so many people cutting cords. While it may not hurt CNN, MSNBC, and the like, as much as ESPN I look at like this - every penny that they do not get is a benefit for everyone.

Also an option to get away is Britbox. It streams British and present/past Commonwealth programming. For those of you who need help with the Scottish accents, use the subtitles for the hearing impaired.

Amazon has some Brit shows. I've watched the entire series of Death in Paradise.

I scanned for broadcast channels with a new outdoor antenna, I'm in the Houston area. The TV locked on to 99 channels. I get Buzzer(old game shows) METV, Comet, Grit(old westerns) and more of the junk cable channels. Too many home shopping channels to count. Vietnam programming and the like( meaning Spanish). Lots of Christian stuff. And a boatload of channels that transmit a carrier signal but have no actual programming. I watch Movies Channel often and one called Quest which is old Discovery shows. The outside antenna is a must for as far out as I seem to be (Crosby eastern edge of Harris county) Of course I get the big broadcast channels that offer nothing. Of the streaming stuff I like Hulu some and Amazon video a lot
