Do you not realize 100% of all humans die, and that life expectancy is a gross statistic, not a specific promise?

If the medical community lumped abortions into that statistic, I think we’d see life expectancy plummet.

Love it. I get to speak to students from all the schools at UT Health in San Antonio each year. I say something like this every year.

Every one of your marathon running patients, every nutrition obsessed patient, every smoker, every non-smoker will die. You will not save anyone from what is coming. Good health is just the slowest possible rate of dying. Don't dismiss patients that aren't "healthy" as being "non-compliant". Sure, they may be non-compliant but their end is the same as your healthiest patient.

Most westerners don't want to talk about death, don't have an answer for death, and just ignore it. Some think they'll fight it by being "healthy". And, yet, death comes.

As doctors, especially young doctors, we really don't come to grips with the fact that all these things will affect us as well. We may understand the physiology, pathophysiology, and treatments better than others but we are not more immune to disease and death.

Of course I'm not saying you shouldn't try to prolong your life. I just try to give the students some perspective.

I do. I continue to applaud the transparency TMC has on this subject.

I do too. I wish they published death rate and trend info as well. Sure we can get that elsewhere but having a like to like comparison from the same data source would be nice.

    To that end...

One simple question I asked the great Dr. HKS, for at least a week now, why are the death rates either stabilizing, or decreasing, with more positive cases being shown.

I quit asking questions because they're ignored or cherry picked. Honestly, I don't know why anyone wastes their time or energy with him anymore.

That said, deaths are a lagging indicator and can be by as much as a month. I don't think quite enough time has elapsed to see for sure what the impact of the increased case numbers will have.

I know your question to HKS is about his attitude but I'll give the medical answer.

Because we're treating it better. We don't have a cure but we've learned a little bit and handle it better. It's also possible the virus has mutated to some degree. I haven't looked to see if they have noticed any mutations.

At some point the numbers will drop further as the most at risk die from COVID, we isolate them better, or we have herd immunity.

That too. Seems a ton has been learned in just a few months in how to battle this.

Yeah, we're not intubating as quickly, we're giving more steroids, and we're using an antiviral with some efficacy. I'm not aware of any other widely accepted treatment protocols. Just knowing how to manage the vent or other supplemental oxygen is very helpful.

Everybody dies someday. Maximize your joy and minimize your worry. I heard a 19 year on Marine put it another way. We were huddled under a four poncho hooch on a muddy hill somewhere out there when he said that he didn't want to get old and have to say "I wish I had..." I'm old and Ann Margaret wouldn't have put out for me anyway. LOL!

    Our Austin leader............."Wheeled Moron"?
    Really? Really.

Mr. Abbott, reacting, maybe too little and too late to avoid a lot of blood on his hands. Yes, he should have shut down many things far earlier than he did.

Find something optimistic in the graph below. Those are TMC admitted Texans trying to die.
    https://www.tmc.edu/coronavirus-upd...9-positive-patients-icu-med-surg-in-hospital/
Over 2,000 fellow Texans terribly ill in that one health care system.
    Optimism tough to come by.

    The average male SARS-CoV-19 death.
13 years off their, otherwise expected, life.

Oh. Yes. Your synopsis of our "Wheeled Moron" as an assessment of our Texas governor????
Says something disturbingly inimical about your psyche.
King Abbot should not have shut anything down. His Majesty should have left us with our rights and those who want to wear a mask can, and those that don't won't. Businesses can require masks as they please, but to selectively pick and choose what legal business can operate and which cannot is not right.

To declare an emergency and have it run months is well beyond the intent of the law. Recall the legislature and do this the right way, with representation at least.

Since this is the thread where I've been posting TMC information for some reason...

As of yesterday, if hospitalization growth remains static (big if), TMC projects that they will likely not hit Phase 3 capacity within the next 2 weeks.
