I have the top of the line PitBoss, and a big Weber gas grill, and it has a handle to open the searing grate for steaks or anytime really high heat is desired. Since getting the pellet grill about 15 months ago, I have used the Weber exactly 3 times.

    Is it the Navigator?

How well does the searing grate work?

I don’t know the model, but it was the biggest one they made for last year. It has 2 temperature probes and about a dozen temp settings. The searing grate is awesome. I push the handle to the left to open it which gives it direct heart instead of just radiant heat. Push the handle to the right and it closes off again.

ETA: I just looked and its the pit boss pro series.

I sure like my home made smoker and grill. The smoker was built from a 55 gallon hydraulic tank, an air tank from a Mack truck and various other items I scavenged. The grill was built from an old water heater. Both of them I have been using for well over 12 years now, if not closer to 15.

The thing I like about my Big Green Egg and my Weber gas grill is that there is no electricity required, so they are completely portable. And the Egg is pretty easy to regulate the temperature on once you get some experience with it.

I use the gas grill for burgers and the Egg for most everything else.

Did some more research and I think I'm sold on the RecTec. Now to decide on size but I think the 700 is it.

The Yoders look great but just a little more than I want to spend.

The BGE / Kamado grills look really interesting. I wouldn't mind trying one.

It's hard to beat an Old Smokey when it comes to a charcoal grill. I have three sizes and it's my "go to" when I have a couple of hours to do steaks, chops, or chicken. I use a Weber propane grill whenever I need to do a steak or chicken or pork chops quickly. It's also great for fish. Then, I have a LyfeTyme pit with a firebox for briskets and ribs, and a Masterbuilt smoker (electric) for more serious occasions.
Nothing is perfect. Sometimes you need a torque wrench and other times you need a breaker-bar!

I recently purchased a Pitts and Spitts Maverick 1250. As stated earlier, it is the bees knees. I still have my 22” Weber charcoal grill for quickness, but it has been used exactly two times so far. I went with P&S since they had a special with free cover and free trapdoor grate upgrade. Call them, maybe they’ll do it still anyway. I was looking hard at a Yoder 640, and ultimately decided to support TX. I did 2-10lb butts, a 16lb brisket, and 3 racks of ribs at 215*, all at once, used 20-25lbs of pellets. One of my brothers friends refers to it as an ez bake oven. I’m fine with that. I have zero desire to stay up all night maintaining a fire, I have better things to do, like sleep good

Whatever you decide, do your best to buy American. At least look for one made in Taiwan, China hates them, so they might be ok. Yes, USA made is expensive but until we kick China’s ass square out of our daily lives, we can all expect more authoritarianism each and every year.
    MHO, hope it helps,

    I went with a RecTec 700.

The stainless construction and price were the selling points for me.

Did the initial smoke on it today. Now to figure out what to cook first.

And also to figure out what to do with these propane tanks.

Not to mess up the thread about your new pellet grill but here is my baby from academy. Goats used my last bbq pit as a playground and broke it. Smoked 2 turkeys last November when I got this one. Literally got it instead of having my inlaws cook turkeys in the oven and its my baby.

I recently got a Pit Boss 700 and so far I like it a lot. I also have a gas grill though for cooking burgers and other quick stuff. Learning to smoke brisket is definitely an art.
