Well I'd be interested to see what you decide on. Never done a bolt action build, so I'm curious how it goes. Just start with a whole rifle and take it apart and replace pieces or buy a stock, receiver, bolt and barrel, etc

I really wanted to this thread as learning experience for myself and others. I know this project is viable. I shot a rifle that was built in 22WMR by my close friend and member here on the forum, Txhillbilly, just a month ago at my house. I got the inspiration quite some years ago when he started the build of his on another forum. He and I talked at length several times on the phone about his rifle and my possibly doing the same thing. We found out with his, it's definitely possible to build a very accurate 22WMR rifle.

The only way to to that with this thread will be to put some of the participants on ignore while contributing to the thread!

BTW I've never known of anyone here doing a "build" a 22mag firearm.

If that's a doable thing tell us about it.

Teach us something about how to undertake the endeavor rather than being offensive to your responders who are here to simply share ideas.

Dye, most rimfire barrels are, press fitted into the receiver, with a retaining pin that goes into a groove cut into the exterior of the barrel shank portion that tits into the receiver. Some are just fitted by tolerance and use a locking compound, similar to thread locker. Rimfires don't have the pressure levels of centerfires, so they don't required being threaded to secure them to the receiver.

Most rinfires are very similar in their receiver and barrel designs of the way they are fitted together. If you have access to a lathe, or decent machinist, it's pretty simple to fit a new barrel to a receiver. Many bolt action rimfires, use tubular receivers, so truing them up to the bew barrel isn't that difficult either.

He's busy here instead of saving them. Does that count?

By all means, keep going. A .22WMR is perfectly doable. It just depends on how much you are willing to put into it and what you consider acceptable as far as what you will get for accuracy. You may find that out to 100-150 yards that it will drive tacks. Then lose stability at 200.
Just a thought. A Savage .22 mag bolt action with something like a Boyds stock would be nice. Not sure what you can do as far the trigger unless you get an accutrigger. They do a heavy sort and heavy barrel for the A.22 mag, not sure if it would fit the bolt action. They should have one to fit it though.
Another thought, T A models are really fun tack drivers. Bedding will help even more.

Rifle Basix makes an adjustable sear for the Pre-Accutrigger Savage rimfires. So I'd like to go with one of those if I went with a Savage M93.

I have a Boyds stock and the Rifle Basix sear on my Savage M93 in 17HMR. Boyds has a lot of selections to choose from. I have used their stocks on three different rifles. They are pretty good stocks.

Thanks, I appreciate that info. I'm pretty new to bolts and Rimfire in general, but also want to do a project build. I wanna try 17 hmr though, seems like it's be a fun cartridge. Also it's always fun to have some variety when you go do some shooting with friends.

In general id really like to see what you can get out of a 22 wmr, and apply what I can glean from this thread to make a 17 hmr bolt action

Dye, I'm going to be honest, getting the accuracy from the 22WMR I think will be harder than the 17HMR! My Savage 17HMR still has the factory receiver and barrel and have never been taken apart. Shooting a 17 HMR is a blast! The ammo is a little higher than 22WMR ammo, but still very reasonable in price. Biggest downside with the 17HMR is wind. It's very sensitive to cross wind of any kind. I have seen my bullets move as much as 8 to 10 inches at a 100 yards.

This is my Savage Model 93R17 that I customized with a Boyds stock, Rifle Basix trigger sear, and a BSA Sweet 17 in 6-18x40 scope.

ETA: For some reason, the pictures would load, but check mine out here, Post #37 has the pictures of it.

Does anyone actually read the previous posts I have posted?

I already have a wonderfully accurate Savage M93 in 17HMR.

Have already done the 17HMR. I want to build a 22WMR now.

I’m beginning to think not as well. I was banging my head on the wall for you.

My Savage FVSR got this trigger. About 1 lb pull weight.

I hated the Boyds stock I bought. Very soft wood in the one I had. I like solid walnut though! Rheinland Arms stock (out of business I think). With the silencer on and some CCI standard velocity ammo it is mostly hammer fall and click and pfft. Very, very accurate too!

That's a nice looking rifle. Those boys stocks are not terribly expensive. You like them I take it?

    Thank you Dye!

I do like them. They have gone up in price since I bought the ones I have. I think they are still decently priced, but they got pretty popular, so pricing went up.
I only did a quick look through them, but they all seemed under $200 pretty much. For a really nicely made rifle stock, that wouldn't hurt my feelings to pay. I've paid more for worse furniture in my house, so I will probably have less buyers remorse even if it's an okay stock for the price.

Just bare in mind, they are wood and may take a little fitting. Both of mine did. I have talked to them directly as well. They recommend bedding for best accuracy. But both of mine shoot better than I do most of the time.
