Kinda exciting here today. Our Electric Co-op has been running fiber down our main road for the last couple of weeks. I was a little doubtful they'd hook us in, as we're about 1/4 mile off that road (after thinking about this, MOST of their potential customers are at least as far off the road). But Friday, there was a crew running the braided steel "carrier" wire right up to our power pole. It was getting late, so they said they'd be out today to run the actual fiber. We have been suffering with HughesNet for months (yes, I have bitched about them more than once here. Sorry). I think the fiber will be a huge improvement and costs less.
Here's the end of the cable, lying in our yard, with a power pole behind it.

I ditched Suddenlink's 1Gig service for the the Co-ops fiber internet and it was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. It has been just over a year now, and my internet has gone out once in that time, and it was for less than 5 minutes. I have 500 mbps up and down speed, and it measures between 472 and 496 on speedtest.net. The best upload speed I ever got with Suddenlink was 17 mbps but was usually about 3.5 mbps. By the time I took that through the company's VPN, I couldn't even present my screen during a conference call.

Well, heck, they were a no-show. No fiber for me today. Maybe tomorrow?
Tx: can you tell me what kind of numbers Speedtest was showing for latency and jitter? HN can actually do okay with data throughput. I get numbers upwards of 30 Mbps in many tests. But latency and jitter numbers are horrid - on the order of 700 ms each. When we had DSL, I would see numbers in single digits of ms. I think those are what make most web sites unusable. They warned me when we signed up that it was not suitable for streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu. No sh*t. But it's worse than that. I typically can't watch a YouTube clip of 1:20 as it takes more than a minute to load, if it EVER does. You have to think about clicking on any link, as it's going to be a production to even load a page.
C'mon, BEC. Send those fiber guys up with my glass.

I just did a test on my 6 year old hard wired iMac and here’s the result:

    Middle of no where
    Evening misfits.
1st day at the new job was good. I ran around with the boss all day & did 2 installs, a service call & had lunch at a new to me burger place. Stopped at the hydraulic hose place & had 3 new hoses made for the tractor. Then helped at the shop getting my new office ready for a little bit before i left. Also when i pulled up this morning my company car was waiting for me... a silver Mazda 3. All in all a pretty good day.
Then got home threw the new hoses on & started mowing. It was looking like a jungle. Got the front finished up & started the back... busted a hose on Friday evening....so had to wait until today to finish mowing the front.
Then threw some steaks on the grill & enjoyed a nice cold beer or 6.
