Friend of mine bought me a way overpriced "Texas" something whiskey. Not good at all. Turns out lots of the things on the store shelf are made by these folks:
    https://www.mgpingredients.com/distilled-spirits

Buy their stuff wholesale, ship it to a bottler, labeler, do the legal / tax requirements and then you are in business.
Yes MGP has been a massive supplier for years now.
It’s Even worse than you probably know.
There are some deceptive and downright shady practices that are legally used to fool the consumer.

A quick check is if the label Doesn’t say “Distilled by (insert company here)”, it’s not made by them.
A lot say “ Bottled by XXX”
Some of the very expensive labels are simply bottling other folks product.

Somewhere around here is another thread where I talk about MGP. They can and do produce top tier products, to include Whistle Pig Rye. I’ve had custom blends from MGP at Carl’s in Steamboat that rival Weller Antique, at a $9 pour.

Having said that, I don’t care for non-distiller ‘brand builders’ charging a premium for a flavor profile just because it’s labeled Bourbon.

ETA: and as you found out, not all bottlers come up with a good flavor profile.

The curiosity for Pappy’s Bourbon has captured me for a while. I just don’t know what justifies its price & demand. If I was sure it wasn’t counterfeit I might throw down $80 for a pull. Man that’s expensive lol. I wonder if they’d accept offers on a pull?

“I’ll give you $50 and I’ll wash the dishes”.

PVW and Old Rip are different brands under Buffalo Trace, both distilled by Sazerac. In the early days, $80 would buy a bottle of Old Rip.

I think Old Rip is a better value.

ETA: Buffalo Trace knows Bourbon, how to promote bourbon, and how to limit supply after driving demand. They’ll start reasonable and large quantities, get some market share, then limit supply while working on other stuff, which drives demand on the bourbon secondary market.

W L Weller is distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery as well. That's my go to for bourbon.

Yep. Perfect example, Weller used to be $17/$22/$26 for a 750/1L/1.5L. It’s now pushing EH Taylor prices.

This year, BT is releasing a Weller Single Barrel to the market in addition to William LaRue Weller that’s only a BTAC offering. That’s the one on my list.

The Pappy's and a few others were kick started to 30,000 feet by the TV show "Justified".

And not that many years ago, well 15...Weller was just another brand in a plastic bottle.

Yeah there was that period when Weller came in the plastic containers. Wasn't crazy about them at all. My introduction to Weller was well over forty years ago.

Four Roses was the same way.

I have been experimenting with some of the top shelf bourbon for a while now. I have found a few that were real good and one that went down the sink drain. I have since decided that I'll sick to the lower shelves and stay with my old stand bys, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey. To me, these are still good choices and cost much less.

Picked up a bottle of Bulliet 8 year old last weekend. Gotta say, I really enjoyed a couple glasses on the patio on Saturday night.
Bulleit is my go-to. Reasonable price, not sweet, not oakey or smokey.

Stopped at Costco yesterday and they were out. I don't care for Jim and even less for Jack.

Like the idea of Balcones (Texas made) but not much of a fan (too sweet or too oakey/smokey).

Ok, now that I've whined for three paragraphs, any recommendations for a solid mid-shelf bourbon that's spicy? Texas maker would be even better. TIA!
