I believe the point is if he ever left boot camp he would have at least made E-2 or 3 before separation.
Yep. Airman basic (E-1) has no rank insignia. IIRC you really have to work at it to get out of BMT as AB. I think it's not uncommon, but the qualifications are not much more than tripping over it.

I was in the Navy and as I remember if you got out of basic training you pretty much automatically became an Airman Apprentice or E2. I know it was much harder to achieve rank back then (like 50 years ago) that it is today. But I don't know about in the Air Force.

When I was in the Navy, E-2 only required 4 months of active duty, and boot camp took care of half of that.

Pulse + 6 months TIG for E-2 in today’s Air Force. Several achievements can result in an advanced enlistment, entering as an E-2.

So your point is what ? That he never served ?

My point is exactly what I've said, and what others have clarified. You don't get photo ops with your girlfriend while you're in basic training. It takes serious effort to make it out of AF basic training without at least one stripe on your sleeve. And no branch of the military is going to go to all the hassle of training someone, sending them to technical school and then to a unit (to be a mechanic, as the daisy-pusher's family has claimed), and then let them just drop out to take care of their girlfriend, whom the DoD does not even recognize as a dependent because she's not a spouse or child of his.

He washed out (or possibly was kicked out) of Basic. It's freaking obvious. He never went on active duty. He was not some valiant, honorable Air Force veteran taking part in a noble protest. He was a washout communist sympathizer who did something stupid and wound up dead for it. End of story.
