I wouldn't read anything into it. If I was going to, I'd figure the heirs like money more then the NFA collection someone loved more then their own looser offspring that went of to a liberal education.

Pretty much. That's how the largest private collection of military vehicles in North America ended up being broken up. Not to mention the decked out 3-bay restoration shop...

Crazy thing is most of those were worth less than a grand May 1, 1986!

AAPL stock was 64 cents per share back then too. Not that crazy, lots of stuff worth a ton now were dirt cheap in the past.

Difference is that this is a largely artificial market. While some of that stuff - especially the documented stuff - is valued as a collectible, if you could be new '28 Thompsons for $999 like you should be able to the market would soften substantially.

If by 'artificial', you mean that there is a extraneous factor interfering the free market forces' ability to set prices, then every market is an 'artificial market' to some extent. Diamonds are only valuable because of DeBeers marketing and market manipulation, land is valuated differently and can be enhanced because of government zoning, Ferrarris are only 20x the cost of a Camry bc of artificial manufacturing caps, etc.

Things are worth what they're worth at that moment.

I'm very curious what the FG42 will sell for. I heard some interesting stories about the last FG42 that went to auction (although that was a type 1, and this is a type 2).
