Caught a 1 day sale only and picked up a top of the line Samsung 4K, 240 hz motion, more bells and whistles that I could imagine. TV was $5500 not so long ago, slowly dropped finally to around $3298, I grabbed the one day deal at $2200.

So I make the jump from a 1080P to the world of 4K and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

Something I did not know: 4K is cinema standard. So when go see a movie, like Star Wars, that is 4k you are looking at.

Look for a LOT of super deals from all the big makers of TV on 4K's as they begin to move them out and make way for 8K.

SO here is the question. Buy into 4K now or wait for 8k which has 2x the resolution and 4x the pixels as 4K?

Remember when Apple "retina" displays? "Retina" refers to screens that have sufficient resolution that at a normal viewing distance your eye can't make out individual pixels.

Got that so is 8K better? You Betcha! BUT can you tell the difference? Well 8K lets you sit further from the screen, but as you get back, the screen gets smaller in size as you see it. IOW at some point in time 8K us better but to be better the screen needs to be bigger so you can sit further.

I replace my 1080P 75 inch TV with a 4K and WOW, what a giant leap, but the leap from 4K to 8K at the same fixed distance, which in our bedroom is about 17 ft from screen to bed pillow. Going to 8K would show little improvement over 4K since I am at my max viewing distance.

Take Away: Grab that deal on 4K, save your money and use it to buy a gun rather than 8K, I doubt you can tell much difference between the 2 unless your screen size covers the entire wall.

Still on my 32", 1080p set for $300 with an XBox One hooked to it. I'll wait until 4K goes down to that price range.

Where are you getting 4k programming? Of does a 4k TV look better even with regular programming?

I suspect it will get there. But at 1080P, 4K would just be a bit better. Bigger the screen is where you capture the goodness. I thought my '75 was great, till I got my 4K and I was blown away, but the 8K would only be a marginal increase in better.

Until there's a lot more 4K content, 8K isn't going to take off.

4K is outstanding got one and can tell when something is native 4k, but it's few and far between.

Directv has 3 channels that do 4k full time and they're mix of sports and nature.

I think YouTube has the most 4k content t a.d most of its worthless dribble.

Wait it out on the 8k.

Xbox One X supports 4K via BluRay and Netflix, as far as I know. Regular TV looks like ass on anything better than 720p.

To be honest, most of the TV I watch is B&W and the difference is AMAZING, even in old 1950's Perry Mason, BIG diff in 1080P vs 4K and on Fox news, WOW!!!!

But I have a 75 in screen and more pixels gives any picture more definition but IMO its the law of diminishing returns, how much definition can you really distinguish, how many colors can the eye see, can you see the difference between 1 Billion colors on a 75 in screen vs 4 billion colors vs 8 billion...

Not apples to apples, but I wanted to replace my old school MVA panel 24 inch computer monitor that has developed a really bad case of light bleed. Kept looking at decent 27 inch 4k monitors, but kept talking myself out of the 450+ they run. Not a question of funds, just a question of me being kind of a cheapskate when it comes to "superfluous" purchases. Anyway, Best Buy has 4k TV's on special all the time, they're 5 minutes up the road, and what the heck - lets try a 43 inch TV as a computer monitor.

    ....

It's actually pretty cool, I dig it :)

I picked up a Samsung 32 curved monitor on sale for $125 the other day. CURVED monitors are GREAT for computers, I really like it. So I have a 27 in flat monitor with the 32 curved next to it...lots of real estate.

I’ll state something that may or may not be common knowledge. “An image will only look as good as the signal you put into it.”

You can watch 4K Bluerays IF you have a 4K player. Also, Netflix and YouTube both have a fair amount of 4K content. 4K looks great so I can’t imagine seeing the difference between 8K.

Oh, and lots of movies are in ultra super duper HD on XBox Movies, too. Both buying and renting.

That is the point: I believe the quality of 4K which is what you see when you go to a movie house, that 8K is not going to get much more because the human eye will not be able to discern the difference.

24k gold is as good as it gets, but I challenge you to be able to tell by looking the difference between 14k, 18k and 24k gold.

There is upconversion that can do wonders, but native is best.

    I've had my 73" for 10-11 yrs.
Been looking to go larger, just waiting for the right deal to come around.

I only have a 42" in the bedroom.

Help yourself to that one in the OOC thread, I don't mind, lol.

By looking, I can't tell the difference between gold and plastic. Some people can. My mom made custom jewelry. I can remember several times when she'd get a piece of gold jewelry marked 18K, look at it, and say "That doesn't look right." Out would come the testing kit and, sure enough, it would actually be 14K or 12K. I don't know how she did it but I know it's possible.

Some of people can't tell the difference between an MP3 file and a 15ips reel-to-reel. Lots can't tell the difference between a CD and an LP. Others certainly can.

I'm not arguing in favor of 8K. I agree with you that 4K is as much resolution as I can use. But I am saying I won't find fault with folks who choose to go the 8K route. If it makes a difference to them it'll be worth it.

Thanks. That's the kind of info I like to hear. That might convince me next time I need a TV, but I simply don't watch enough TV to justify it right now.

I don't have xbox, blue ray, or netflix.

There's a whole bunch of 4K porn out there.

Netflix, youtube, porn. What kind of internet connection does it take to stream 4k videos? I just recently upgraded to a fast enough internet that youtube stopped buffering all the time. I'm guessing I'm nowhere near 4k streaming speed.

I have a Fiber 100Mb pipe and regular testing tells 96 Mb up/96 Mb down. Not sure what the min is to stream 4K.

Not many are listening or looking at me as for TV other than Fox news most of the TV I watch is Antenna.
