My son just bought a Springfield 1911 and it only came with one magazine.
What do some of you guys recommend for aftermarket magazines?

I prefer sticking with the brand names like Wilson, Kimber, Colt, Springfield, etc.

The thing about that is they are all made by someone else. And you don't always know who's providing their mags. Wilson of course being the exception as they make mags.

Adding to the list of the top mags, Wilson all ready mentioned, (ETM best) is probably the best out there, Tripp (Tripp Research, they're here in Texas also), Chip McCormick Power mags and others are good as well.

I use MecGar officers for my CC, I also have CMC (Chip McCormick) Shotting Stars (cheaper line) with either Tripp rebuild kits (spring and hybrid follower) or Wolff springs. I also have some Kimbers that once were made by McCormick, but the ones with the skirted followers but also with Wolff springs.

I've hear a lot of people say they really like the SPringfield mags as well. I think they're made by ACT Mag. They supply mags for a lot of people, Les Baer included I believe.

Wilson 47D's are great, however, my TRP would not for the life of me function reliably with them. PowerMags worked great in every 1911 I have run. Moral of the story, beg or borrow some to try in YOUR gun before plunking down for a dozen or so.

Well, I have several mags from each of those companies I mentioned (including 6 47D's), and I have never had a problem with any of them in any of my four 1911s, so that's why I made the recommendation.

I gotta say Checkmate. It duplicates the original Colt magazine.

You can get it with the Hybrid lips and dimpled follower.

Hybrid lips are tapered to allow controlled, smother feeding.

Dimpled follower keeps last round in place.

I bought some 1911 mags at the last Houston gun show at the GRB
from an outfit called Clips are Us.
The ones I bought looked just like the ones that came with my
High Standard 1911 gov model and had Colt 45 Auto stamped on the
bottom. Payed 9.95 ea and they work great no problems at all.

I have had good performance from Wilson, and Chip McCormick Shooting stars

I'm not sure I'd put the 2 in the same category. I have several Shooting Stars, but they all have either a Tripp Super 7 kit or just a spring replacement so they retain their 8 round capacity. Those I use at the range. As they are, with the devel style follower, I'm not crazy about them. I just don't like that follower, unless it has a good XP power spring and the gun will run with them.

Don't forget Tripp mags. Virgil is right here in Texas too.
