I have a S/A 1911 and I am wondering if it is common for the slide to make contact with outside of the barrel hood when fired. I have contact marks where the locking lugs on the slide ride across the barrel hood. The gun has never failed to function but the marks are unslightly.

Yep, the striations on the hood are pretty normal. I've seen it on Wilson Combats, to my Kimbers, and just about every other gun that's been worked a few times.

+1. Common. I have sometimes tried to smooth rough edges of lug cavities in the slide by wrapping 600 grit sandpaper around a wooden dowel and lightly polishing upper inside area of slide. Am not really sure that it helped to any significant degree.
