I have 1911s and an XD45 Service model. My 1911s are Commander (4") and Officer Models (3").
If your looking for all day carry, my kimber Ultra CDP II. I have carried my XD45 Service model and after a long day I still remember it is there. (14 rounds of 45acp are not light, but it is still a good feeling)
My Ultra CDP II has been the perfect all day carry for me, but the XD45 is a great shooter.

+1 awmp on the ultra cdp.

You just need to find a range where you can rent one of each. IMO, after shooting a good 1911, its hard to go back to a polymer gun. That's just me though.
