Currently sitting in a field up by Royce City, public land, not seeing a damn thing lol. This is my 4th hunt up here on public and the only day I saw birds was opening day, which was also accompanied by big storms and a front. Anyone else up in DFW seeing any birds?

Can you remember when you had to go to Mexico to hunt/find White Wing dove? And now our Louisiana man came up dry in the RGV. "Maybe a cold front will drive 'em down from Kansas." That's an old yearly-used saying.

After the big freezes of the late 80’s the white-wing left the valley.
Heck, they’re thick in San Antonio and even Houston.

The white-wings left in 2001 from overhunting. I was living @ Brownsville back then. Our last hunt then was 2002, the two of us just rode around a big farm on the River in Cameron County, saw two doves, never took guns out of cases.

We have had white-wings @ Galveston, Houston, & New Orleans n the interval. Today, there is a good size colony in my neighborhood in Saint Martinville, about 10nm SE of the K-LFT Airport.

We joke about backyard hunting, but I wouldn't ever shoot our resident birds. We have wood ducks, Mexican tree ducks, Mourning doves, -, even a couple bluebirds (not jays).

The squirrels are another matter. They are running me nuts with branch cuttings every night. Looking for an air rifle. . . . . . .

Wife's Family is at El Campo, I hear they had plenty doves last week.

With the exception of one year I always used a 24 inch JC Higgins 12 gage full choke 7.5. That gun must have killed thousands of dove n Quail over the years between my grandfather dad and me.

For dove I had a secret spot between farm fields and large cattle ponds in Wickenburg AZ. Wheelbarrows full of dove over a few days every year in our group.

I'm not kidding. It was like those spots in Mexico where you can seemingly reach up n grab them.

For stimulating fun Quail hunting is the deal. They can fly.

Saw a couple of dozen in Hondo this week, but they were at altitude. Took some doing to get enough for dinner.

Looks like we might have the exact same truck. Glad yours was spared. Had the same thing happen to us last year with a tree about like that, but in the back.
