Probably trying to digest his meal.

I dunno, every time my lure got close (right before it popped out of the water) the snake would start moving toward it. Seemed like it was still hungry, but maybe it was out of defense? Was pretty cool to watch him none the less!

Nope. That is a Western Rat Snake. 100% guaranteed. That guy eats mice and you guessed it…rats. Keeping them around is a good thing.
