Who makes the best .40 caliber pistol? ???? I am thinking of backing down form a .45 to a .40 and have no idea where to begin with all this double action nonsense? Is there a single action version out there?

Browning was making the HP in .40S&W but I am not sure if they still offer it or not.

There are a few. As for 1911's, Kimber used to but dropped it last year.

Is there a reason you want to go to a .40 S&W? I don't think you'll save any money on ammo if that's what it is. I've never shot a .40 but I hear it's a little more snappy. A reason I think a lot of people don't care for it.

Other than that, it seems to be a good SD caliber.

I have a sig p229 in .40 and love it. 12 shot double stack mag, I don't seem to notice the extra snap as much as others mention it on here sometimes. I also could agree with lunchbox on the springfield. great guns.

My previous post was in response to the question about a single-action .40, just FYI.

Best is a relative term. What might be best for you is not best for another. Also the "Best for what?" question comes into play. (Self defense, target, CCW, House gun, etc.)

Some of the more common manufacturers:
    Glock DAO
    Sig Sauer DAO or DA/SA
    CZ platform (EAA, Tangfolio) DA/SA
Smith & Wesson makes quite a few.
    Beretta DA/SA
    Kahr DAO
Springfield Armory SA in 1911 or DAO in XD
    Ruger DAO, DA/SA
    STI SA 1911
    AMT DAO (I think)
HK DA/SA DAO I'm sot sure they make a cocked and locked variant in .40
I'm sure there are many that i forgot.

Try finding a range that rents, or go shooting with a buddy to try his/hers. Find what works for you and you shoot best. Only you can determine what is the "best" for you.

    Good Luck

I have a Glock 22 in 40 that has never malfunctioned since I bought it new in 1994. Throws anything you feed it into a 3" group at 25yds.

Does relibility equal "best" in your opinion? It does to me. All I ask of a defensive pistol is that it be raltively accurate and give me absolutely no troubles. The Glock 22 has definately done that.

I play around with 1911s, SIGs and other pistols, but only the G22 stays at my side 24-7 for defense...because it gives me no troubles.

Summit Gun Broker is now selling nice used G22s for about 350 bucks. These are 2nd generation G22s like mine. 350 bucks for a ready to go, totally reliable 40 with a good reputation is pretty decent, if you ask me.
