Who makes the best .40 caliber pistol? ???? I am thinking of backing down form a .45 to a .40 and have no idea where to begin with all this double action nonsense? Is there a single action version out there?

There are a few. As for 1911's, Kimber used to but dropped it last year.

Is there a reason you want to go to a .40 S&W? I don't think you'll save any money on ammo if that's what it is. I've never shot a .40 but I hear it's a little more snappy. A reason I think a lot of people don't care for it.

Other than that, it seems to be a good SD caliber.

I have a sig p229 in .40 and love it. 12 shot double stack mag, I don't seem to notice the extra snap as much as others mention it on here sometimes. I also could agree with lunchbox on the springfield. great guns.

Best is a relative term. What might be best for you is not best for another. Also the "Best for what?" question comes into play. (Self defense, target, CCW, House gun, etc.)

Some of the more common manufacturers:
    Glock DAO
    Sig Sauer DAO or DA/SA
    CZ platform (EAA, Tangfolio) DA/SA
Smith & Wesson makes quite a few.
    Beretta DA/SA
    Kahr DAO
Springfield Armory SA in 1911 or DAO in XD
    Ruger DAO, DA/SA
    STI SA 1911
    AMT DAO (I think)
HK DA/SA DAO I'm sot sure they make a cocked and locked variant in .40
I'm sure there are many that i forgot.

Try finding a range that rents, or go shooting with a buddy to try his/hers. Find what works for you and you shoot best. Only you can determine what is the "best" for you.

    Good Luck

I have a Glock 22 in 40 that has never malfunctioned since I bought it new in 1994. Throws anything you feed it into a 3" group at 25yds.

Does relibility equal "best" in your opinion? It does to me. All I ask of a defensive pistol is that it be raltively accurate and give me absolutely no troubles. The Glock 22 has definately done that.

I play around with 1911s, SIGs and other pistols, but only the G22 stays at my side 24-7 for defense...because it gives me no troubles.

Summit Gun Broker is now selling nice used G22s for about 350 bucks. These are 2nd generation G22s like mine. 350 bucks for a ready to go, totally reliable 40 with a good reputation is pretty decent, if you ask me.

Thanks guys for all your help. After much thought about this I am staying with my single action .45s. In my opinion you just can not beat their accuracy.

I used to have Glock 23 and 22. I loved the 23. I have a 27 now (Thanks TXSUT!). Check out the FNP-40 as well. The 40 is a great round and is my favorite. However, I must say there is nothing like a 45ACP and I love my STI Ranger II. As for it being snappy, if you like a 45 you will have no problem with the 40. Moving up from say a 9mm may make some people not like it i would think.

Well ok I can see where you can say that..
but the 40 can do that and also carry more rounds
in the mag. now we can toss in the advantage of
the 45 and a bigger hole that it will make and we are
    back to square one again..

I have been shooting competitions for the last 19 years
started with a single stack 45, ran it decent then up graded it
to a comp and bomar sights, wow made me a little better when
the equipment was better, then came along the para guns (full built not just the frame) bought one in 45 for the capacity, and again I got
I got a little better little bit later that 40 came out and every one
was going to it, well I waited and ran what I had until a friend needed
one of my guns more than I did so we traded para 40 limited and
I have not looked back. well that was until I decided to go back to
the old school and shoot the single stack just for fun.. :)

Ok so the moral of the story, find someone that has a 40 and
try shooing it.. you might like it.. if then your not out any money for
a gun, maybe a lunch and ammo for the friend..

Sig P226 or P229, HK, UPS or P2000 or Glock 22 are my recommendations. There are others, but I know the ones I mentioned are excellent guns.

Springfield XD or XDm. But if you're "backing down" from .45 to .40sw the only reduction will really only be in knock down power, bullet diameter, and ammo price.
