have 2 boxes(200ea) of hornady #4420, 44 cal, 240gr, jhp (.430) i would like to trade for some 200gr hp or 180gr hp 44/.430 for my 44 special, would like some good "defensive" type bullets like these. i think these are a bit too heavy for the 44special.

The 180gr have proven light except at higher velocities not achieved in the 44 spl.
I say this because I have used the 44cal platform to hunt with for many years.
The only way I could ever get good penetration and expansion was above 1500fps using a 10.5 barrel with a 1:20" RH twist
As for the 240gr never had a problem.
The 200 gr is a good choice but keep velocities up around 900fps
I wish I had what you were looking for I would love to do a trade.
I don't have any 200 or 180gr that are not loaded and for range use I use Rainiers plated HP.
The Rainiers have proven to be an excellent range bullet.
You can push the envelope pretty hard with these bullets.
I have not had a problem under 1400fps.
Over 1400fps there is some minor plating residue in the forcing cone.
At 1600fps the plating will be found 1 inch out from the forcing cone and builds up quickly.
    Anyway good luck!!

Yeah, my 44spl is an old Rossi snubbie.
Fine gun and fun to shoot.
HP 38 really to fast in the 44spl.
You need to be more along the lines of Alliant Power Pistol in terms of powder burn rate.
That fat 44spl case needs something that fills it better for better accuracy and ignition reliability.
Here are a few powder that work well in that case / round.
    Alliant Power Pistol 7.6gr. - 819fps
    Unique 7.6gr. - 836fps
    2400 11.0gr - 700fps
    Accurate Arms #5 5.8gr. - 750fps

*2400 is the all around best powder in the 44spl and 44mag*

Rule of thumb with big bore / large case diameter pistol rounds. You need a powder that fills the case as much as possible.
You don't want too fast a burn rate or you get erratic ignition.

I load 44spl with Power Pistol at 7.2gr.
I get better accuracy at 7.2gr, than any other load volume.
    Hope this helps.
Try and stay away from flat flake powders like Green Dot.
They don't meter well or ignite as well in such a large case.

    Good luck and fun shooting!!!
