    .44/40 is a bottleneck case, bullet diameter is a nominal .427. .44 Special is a straight case, bullet is a nominal .429.

    .44-40 also refered to as .44 WCF (Winchester Center Fire).
    .44 Special is "officially" called the .44 Smith and Wesson Special.
