I have a Marlin 1895MXLR IN 450 Marli. I am looking start reloading for it.
I have been shooting the Hornady Leverevolution 325 gr. It has performed very well in this gun, but I am preparing for an elk hunt in the fall and having trouble finding quite a bit ammo, so I hope to find components necessary to reload this round. Not sure if they are as hard to find as loaded ammo.
Any load info and data would be greatly appreciated.
i am also curious about the the difference be the 450 Marlin and 45-70 casing, I know the 450 is belted, but is there any other physical difference ?
I ask because a friend has a load worked up for his 45-70, and I’m curious if it would translate to my 450.

    Thanks for any input

    Hey Dingo,

The 450 has a bit more capacity, than the 45/70. (the 450M is a bit stronger than the 1895 in 45/70)

For elk? A 405 to 425gr WFN over 28 to 35gr of either of the 4198's should do just fine...(H 322, Rx7, 3031 will all do)

The 325gr Leverlution bullet may/may not get to the vitals on an elk critter.....

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck on your Wapiti...

    Later, Mark

    Hey Dingo,

Trust me, get a 405 to 425gr WFN going along about 1600fps.......stem to stern penetration..1" hole, clean through.

    30" of cow. 6 or 7 milk jugs... 405 @ 1100fps....

The video stated they loaded their 45-70 with Unique which sent me down a 3 hour rabbit hole of searching 45-70 loads with different powders. I now have load charts with Unique, Blue Dot, and Bullseye, all with max charges under 20 grains. Time for a little load testing and money saving.

I am not an expert about this but the Hornady manual talks about the 325gr FTX and the fact that the brass is trimmed to 2.040" and they warn about using exact load data specified in their manual. So the brass you have may be a little questionable reloading unless you use Hornady data and your case trim length is exactly dependent on the bullet used. PM me if needed.
