I can only attest to the recoil of a 450BM. I can't see the 458 being that far off from it. I've never shot it personally. As for the recoil on 450...

It'll loosen teeth. It's a no joke why they call the 45 sized round in an AR...Thumper.

It's everything you think it is.

I'd compare the .458 Socom recoil with that of a 12 gauge field load. I do NOT like recoil, but it was not excessive.

I load only 300 grain bullets designed for the 45-70 for my own rifles, but I've fired other rifles in .458 Socom from SBR and suppressed form owned by my friends. It's pretty impressive and the hunters around here have dropped hogs and deer. They drop like sacks of rocks!

A non scientific comparison puts the .458 Socom 300 grain and 45-70 300 grain real close in performance.

Nope. I've shot it off the bench. It's a Son of a B-itch. Folks can say it's not that much all day long.

It'll put you back. Lean into a 12ga on some bags. Get in good and slowly squeeze.

You said you’ve never shot one a few posts back.

Yeah, there hasn't been a 12Ga that put me back as an adult...
Had to prove I could handle 3" magnum loads when I was 12... in a Mossberg 500.

Still can't find any 12ga that compares to full-house level 3 loads on a 45-70 guide gun... and even that's very managable.

But I'll admit, I love recoil.

    I'd love to fire a 458 socom... I doubt it's that bad.
Simple physics says a ~7# semi-auto can't be as bad as a 7# lever-action, especially when the muzzle energy of the 45-70 is higher.

There are more factors, maybe you need more shoulder fat

When I was working up loads for the .458 Socom, I fired a lot of rounds with light slugs and heavy subsonic. Recoil was not excessive.

Projectiles for the .458 are foolishly expensive and some run over $1.00-1.50 per bullet. I can't afford that, so I adapted 300 grain Hornady #4500 sphp bullets for about 40 cents each.

There is an identical Sierra 300 grain bullet for about the same price and I snag either one on sale at Midway. I use the same bullets to load 45-70.

OK.....a cheap plinker it isn't, but a guy on a budget can afford to fire this shoulder cannon!

I have only shot a handful of rounds, its a thumper and expensive. But if you want to drop a hog its got to be up there with the best options.

This is what interests me in this round. I've been toying with the idea for three or four years. Just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on a gun I would not shoot often.

    But I want one....

I read the posts and have a suggestion:

The .458 Socom is the upper assembly for an AR-15. There are no modifications needed in the lower assembly or to the magazine. Some grind a radius on the forward end of the magazine claiming that it feeds better. I have never modified a magazine nor do I know anyone who has. Use standard, metal AR magazines.

In short...………….. why sweat the cost of a .458 Socom? Assemble an upper assembly in .458 Socom, push two pins and you have a shoulder cannon. When you're done hunting or shooting, push two pins and change the rifle back to a 5.56 or .300 BLK.

That was the whole purpose of the .458 Socom….easy change over for operations where they had to drop sentries in their tracks. Socom= Special Operations Command. The suppressed versions of the .458 are quiet, accurate and very lethal.
