    The other failure in the design is there are only two little ears to take the full recoil of the round. Had those been full length with crossbar, this likely would not have happened. there also seems to be a simple pushpin to hold upper and lower together.

    The ears are not supposed to take recoil. Typically, they do not take any recoil. The threads of the screw on breech cap, breech cap, and barrel threads and barrel are supposed handle the recoil. The 'ears' are only there to assure the shooter that the breech cap is screwed down all the way. If it isn't, the screw cap won't clear the ears.
