JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Two police officers were in critical condition and six others were hurt in an early morning shootout here that left two suspects dead, a police spokesperson said.
One of the officers was shot in the face and the other was hit in the neck by shotgun blasts as they tried to enter an apartment with other officers to arrest two suspects, police said. Both were being operated on Thursday morning.
Mayor Jerramiah Healy said a "terrible gunfight" erupted, with shotgun blasts shattering the door and wall.
When the bullets stopped, two suspects were dead. Their names have not been released.
The incident began around 5 a.m. when police spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with an armed robbery.
The suspects, one armed with a pump shotgun, retreated into a building, police said. Police evacuated the building and then went after the suspects.
Sources told NBC affiliate WNBC that two of the police with minor injuries were struck during an initial round of gunfire.
A tactical police team then moved into the area, and another barrage followed, the sources said, injuring more officers.
The wounded officers were taken to Jersey City Medical Center.
